  • Prado 150 Kakadu Nav

Does anyone know of any possible upgrade to the standard navigation disc provided with the Kakadu.
    Current coverage is very limited
    Thanks

I suppose first question is what version map does it have. I believe we are up to version 18 now? Quite easy to copy (so I am told :-)

My experience has been NO.I tried to find out ages ago and came to the conclusion that as a disc drive - thats your lot.
It uses Whereis discs and that is all, same as my 120 series Grande. I think the current version is V17.New discs are a joke at $400 each.

V18 became available about a month ago, the whereis web site has a pdf brochure that lists the map updates.

        http://www.whereismaps.com/buy-map-u...s&deviceid=252

You'll see on the site that they want $295 for the disc.

If you shop around you will find them for a lot less.

I picked up my new Kakadu in April 2012 and the first thing I noticed was how rubbish the "Where Is" maps are pre installed in the Prado. I also was angry that the new 2012 model was shipped with version 17 maps. After a very short phone call to my dealer, I was told that there was nothing they could do to upgrade to the current maps (version 18) and it would cost me $295. I raised this to management and then directly to Toyota Customer service. I received a phone call last week to tell me that in good faith I will be getting the latest maps courtesy of the customer service department.

I am amazed that a car that has all of the modern technology designed to go offroad still has very limited GPS functionality, it would be great if they could allow topo maps to be installed also.

            Kakadu inbuilt GPS system

Does the Kakadu's inbuilt GPS have a facility to upgrade the maps and firmware? If so is this done via a DVD or some other means? I just want to know before I pick up my 2009 Kaka on Friday, I can't recall there being anything in the envelope of manuals the salesman showed me. I'm hoping it's update-able as maps from 2009 would be out of date by now. It would be nice if it did speed zones and traffic camera alerts too, I do a lot of mundane city driving.

I'm currently running a Navman MY85XLT in the 90, not sure how the features on the Prado unit compare. I also have the 4WD Tracks upgrade loaded on the Navman but it just shows a line on the map, no topographical features. I'm assuming the Kaka's unit just has normal city maps and no off-road ones, let me know if that's incorrect.

Is it worth hanging on to the Navman or does the Kaka's unit do a good enough job?

"It would be nice if it did speed zones and traffic camera alerts too" It doesn't

"I'm currently running a Navman MY85XLT in the 90, not sure how the features on the Prado unit compare" The Prado unit compares very poorly

"I'm assuming the Kaka's unit just has normal city maps and no off-road ones" Correct

"Is it worth hanging on to the Navman or does the Kaka's unit do a good enough job?" Depends what you want, but probably hang onto the Navman

So there's a stacker under the seat? I thought it was all in-dash?

The Navman has nice features like lane guidance and the aforementioned safety alerts, it's just a hassle having to unhook it all and put it away every time you leave the car. I was hoping to dispense with the Navman but sounds like I need to do some comparison testing first.

Damn, just checked mine and it's only at v16, latest map is v18. I have a Navman MY85XLT with a current subscription, might have to use that instead. The Navman does safety camera alerts as well which I see the Toyota system does not. For all the money you pay for a Prado with sat nav you think they would have a better system.

I've had the tyres changed back to the standard size so probably should do a GPS recalibration. The Nav System manual tells me how to get into that setting but not how it works. When I tried it I got a message saying the calibration mode was active but what do I need to do after that?

Also can anyone tell me if this disk would contain the OEM OS files or just maps?

                            http://s14.postimage.org/4kva1fbe9/P..._DVD_Label.png

There's some doco in the glovebox but it's marked for v15, I hope the previous owner didn't bin the OS disk when he updated his maps.

I put the nav into calibration mode yesterday then drove home. It told me when it went into calibration mode but not when it finished, have no idea what if anything it did.
