    What the Dealer said

I've joined Pradopoint to add a bit more to this. Having read this thread and some discussion in the Adelaide Advertiser's Car Guide, I took my 2008 Prado in for its 90,000 km service yesterday and raised the matter with the Toyota dealer. Their view is:

    1. This all comes from one disgruntled customer who was not following the service schedule and had problems which he then tried to blame Toyota for.
    2. The recall in Europe was for 1KD motors built up to 10/2007 (mine is 3/2008, so it should be OK).
    3. The build specs for Europe and NZ are different in any case.
    3. They have seen the Pradopoint thread and are aware of the issue, but have had no problems themselves and they are not aware of any other Toyota dealers who have seen an engine with this problem.
    5. They expect that TMC will issue a statement soon to clarify this matter. They think that TMC might be reluctant to issue one right now as there is still legal action pending somewhere.

This is all very reassuring, BUT I would like to see a statement from TMC right now as there is so much anxiety over this matter out there. We need TMC to either state that the problem will not occur (and then we can hold them to that if it does occur) or to do a recall. As many of you have noted, Toyota will start to lose customers if they can't retain their reputation for reliability.

Dropped car off this Arvo for service requested that they check the screen anyways just to be sure.

Mulga Bill....Check your Oil Pickup Screen!

        G'day MulgaBill,

I think you dealer is misinformed on a number of counts,

All I can say is search Pradopoint for an extensive history of issues from a number of owners dating back many years, regarding all the key words....develop your own opinion.

My recommendation... great motor, but check for injector leaks & screen clogging at 40,000 klm intervals. This way ensuring you have a properly maintained motor that will probably exceed your expectations.

Mulga, as Landuser said check all the posts in this forum as there has been at least one case of a 2010 build D4D with the blocked screen problem albeit out of a hilux.

Thanks, Riv and Landuser. I'll get the screen checked.

By the way, the dealer said that they have to take the sump off to do this as they don't have a camera probe. I wasn't very impressed by that.

Gee they call the patrol 3 ltr diesel engine a hand grenade I think Toyota has got their own! As a prospective buyer of a prado who joined the forum to gain real information from everyday users I have been shocked at Toyotas mishandling of this issue which has made me 2nd guess whether to buy a Prado or Toyota. I spoke to a salesperson at Toyota about this issue and like many other responses on this forum it was a total denial, which scares me as a future owner about how I would be treated.

Hi Mulga, I think you know the truth on this from checking a great deal of the recent contributions, particularly by those resident experts Roo, Davros and others. Of course the sump need not come off for a simple check, but if it is clogged, unfortuntely for a proper clean, it will, along with the rocker cover as well. Injector seal change and other maintenance according to mileage should be done at this time.

I just want to add that with these important extra maintenance actions coupled with regular service schedules, the
D4D as is should provide long life and reliability. certainly some aspects of the design can always be improved, however I think the only real flaw currently is ignoring some of these known issues in regular service programs. I think this will change through the efforts of those enthusiasts attempting to raise these issues to the point where they will be heard. I believe Toyota is starting to hear us all and this is a good thing for Toyota, owners & enthusiasts.

                  G'day DRJ,

Mate, Sales people are no different to the rest of the population, some are more informed than others, some more honest than others. As they say, let the buyer be aware. Off course forums like this are a big help in understanding the product firsthand. At least Toyota products are well supported by forums like pradopoint. This is just as important for the buyer as well as the enthusiast.

As I mentioned to Mulga, The important extra maintenance actions of Injector seal renewal & screen check, coupled with regular service schedules, should guarantee your prospective D4D Prado provides long life and reliability. certainly some aspects of the design can always be improved, however I think the only real flaw currently is ignoring some of these known issues in regular service programs. So with this knowledge and sharing information with others on this Forum, you should be well equiped to dive straight in to your new Prado purchase. Good luck & have fun!

Is it just the D4D that is having these issues

I run a workshop that maintains over 300 toyota's and the majority have D4D's.
There is a problem with injector seals. We have had 2 major failures and pulled the sump on at least 10 cars to clean the pick up.In the last 6 months as well.

I have spoken to a supplier and he can get us titanium injector seals which should fix the problem hopefully.

                      Disappointing.

G'day TS50, I feel it is most important to report your experiences to Toyota formely, I do believe their awarness to this issue is developing here in Australia and for them to respond properly they need to gain this awarness. If you have reported before, don't be reluctant to formely advise them again now. Get pics of observed problems and e-mail it to them and pursue a response. With a proper understanding I do believe we can ultimately rely upon Toyota for a sound & helpful response on what essentially is a most robust engine outside of this potential problem area, which can be easily managed with improved maintenance programs.

supportive info can be found on this forum running searchs +injector +seal. & +screen +clogged

In respect to seals, our experience has been with failures on leaking Plain copper seals that have not been attended to over the life of the vehicle.

i believe the Standard Toyota seal was superseeded in Early 2008 with a new plated version from Toyota, although I am not sure what the plating is it does look silver in appearance, Perhaps it is Titanium nitrided? but I don't really know, but it is still copper inside.

I have heard from outher forums this was to deal with a corrosion issue that lead to leakage, but this is not confirmed, it could be purely for a more resilaint seal face?

Please see att pics of new seals, perhaps these are the seals you refer to, and they are current Toyota std inventory:

Thanks for all your advice, especially to Landuser whose comprehensive answers and balanced approach are the sort of thing which will help us all to get some action on this matter.

Good information from TS 50, and I support Landuser's call for this information to be formally sent to TMC.

Roo - the dealer was one of the biggest in Adelaide! As I said, I wasn't impressed by their not having a $99 tool.

I'll be following this thread with interest.
