G'day ROB83R, if you have a look at photo #3 in post number 11 the right angle piece is what I turned around. That normally goes into the rocker cover where I now have the braided looking hose to the catch can.
The right angle piece goes down to the inlet side of the turbo as you mentioned. Just used a small piece of metal tube to join it to the outlet from the catch can, hence the 2 hose clips

Hope this makes sense. Don't forget I have a 150 and am assuming it is the same under the intercooler on the 120.

Hi again Bidla, just noticed in your post you metioned just putting the foam into the can. I made a dividing baffle out of aluminium which goes about1/3 down from the top and put a suporting "tounge" from the baffle across to the side of the can. I pop riveted it in and used lots of silicon, the non toxic sort..It is a bit of a pain to get out but if I get some tike will take it apart and take some photos. Am curious to see just how much oil is in there as none is showing on the sight tube yet.

Just reading around. I understand what the catch-can does, but on a motor that is not highly modified, is there a real need? What are the real benefits for the average Prado? will it make my engine last longer?

I am just trying to get a better understanding so I can consider if I want to go down that track.

          Thanks

The catch can will help prevent build up of gunk on the surface of the intake manifold, as all this oil, caused from blowby, is deposited there when mixed with hot recirculated exhaust gasses entering the intake manifold from the egr valve. This buildup over time increases in thickness, thereby restricting airflow through your intake manifold and may in future, much down the track, lead to over fueling, overheating issues and possibly turbo issues. Think of it as a narrowing of the arteries.

Had a very similar story with my old 1KZ motor, however I was able to block off the egr valve to prevent the hot gasses mixing with the recirculated oil from the pcv, this is not the story with the 1KD motor as it dumps excess boost through the egr valve. In a nutshell it's insurance for the long term and a reduction in Maintenence costs. Not having to remove and clean your intake manifold as often is a plus.

There is a lot of discussion about the bennefits of fitting a catch can on various web pages, especially if you own a 3L Nissan Patrol.
My interpretation is in a nutshell, it stops oil mist from circulating back into the engine via the inlet manifold. The oil in the mist tends to gunge up (a highly technical term) the inlet manifold, which is similar as to why there is so much discussion on EGR blocking (a totally different subject). The air/oil mist is "vented from the top of the engine, the rocker cover, to reduce internal presure build up, in days gone by it was just vented into the atmosphere but that is not alowed anymore.

I am sure there are more technical descriptions that others may be able to provide, hope that helps

              Regards
              Geoff

The more expensive catch cans usually come with a mounting bracket. I don't think you really need to put the foam in there as catch cans work on gravity with the heavier deposits falling to the bottom of the can and clean air moving out of the exit hole at the top.

                  Thanks Roo,
yes I think putting the foam in there with the added stuffing around making the baffle was serious overkill. If I did it again I would not bother with the foam.

It looks like one of my next projects. I am not sure how I will go though as I am severely running out of space. I have a fuse box in the location where the photos Geoff put up show as a good place to install.

Geoff, does yours just catch in the can and then you empty it every ????km, or does it drain back to the sump?

No, just holds in the can. Thought about doing a drain back into the sump (one way is via a "t" piece in the dipstick tube) but decided to wait and see how long it takes for oil to appear in the sight tube. After about 5000Ks nothing of note yet, the can I have has a grub screw in the bottom for draining I have used lock tight to hold it in place and will undo it and let it drain into a shallow dish when the time comes.

                        regards

That spot does look like a neat one to mount the catch can however I've already taken that spot with the winch solenoid box. Looks like it might be a custom bracket for a mount just off the side of the rocker cover. This is going to require some thought.

                              Gday Guys

I made my own oil catch-can (For the 1KD) but eBay would have to be the smarter choice.

I made my own as i have plenty of space (No duel batt etc) and wanted a large surface area to catch/condense as much of the PCV vapor back into an oil state without disrupting gas-flow and is also very easy for cleaning. (The only advantage of a custom job!).

TIP: Make sure that the catch-can does "not" have a ventilation filter as the turbo-intake is after the "MAF" (Mass Air Flow) and (1KD) was designed as a closed loop system (No venting) With PCV gases in mind! ... Not only would it vent into atmosphere (Now illegal) but also draw un-meterd air into the engine. (This also applies to the petrol V6's).

Note: I personally would not have a drain back into the engine as the collected oil also grabs/extracts condensation (water) and makes the caught oil sludgy and for this reason it is best (Advised) kept away from being drained back into the engine.

I would like to share my pics but i am not prepared to share my personal details to a third party via a free hosting. EG: Bucket etc

                              Cheers

Hay Geoff, can you tell me what size pipe you have used for the oil catch can? I am just about to get one and noticed that most of the units for sale on ebay have 10mm or 15mm pipe, but the standard pipe looks like it is about 18mm. I would like to know how this fitted and what did you clamp to when you joined the two bits of pipe.

                                Thanks
