I wanted the air compressor hard mounted so it didn't take up valuable cargo space. As I don't have a welder I looked for options that would be easy to mount without needing brackets welding up. I also didn't love the idea of under bonnet mounting.
Not sure if other models are different so to confirm, this mod was done on my GXL D4D with 3rd row seats already removed.
I removed the LH panel in the cargo bay after popping the cupholder insert out and seeing a lot of space. It's like the tardis in there...
Numerous 6mm nuts in the bodywork just waiting for something to be screwed into them. Other models these nuts are possbily used for something, GXL it appears these are free to use.
TJM had a good special on their 72lpm compressor including hose and a puncture kit so I grabbed one of those. A quick trip to bunnings to grab some L brackets and it was looking like a simple fit. I made a pad out of left-over 12mm ply I had laying around. A bit of rubber around each mounting bolt to absorb some of the vibration and then a test fit. OK with 2 L brackets yet a little too "flexy" for my liking so I bent the heck out of another bracket to support the outer corner of the mounting pad near the compressor head.
I added some SMC air tube to lower the mounting point a bit for the airfilter. The pressure guage from the compressor was removed and a pressure switch added- start at 90 PSI or below, stop at 120. This was linked to a 30Amp relay for switching.
I stuck some off-cuts of marine carpet up inside the guard to help minimise the noise when the aircomp was on. After the addition of cables for Couplertec install and also the ABR Sidewinder rear power kit, it looked like this
Air Comp switch was added when I put all the sockets in the side pocket. Toggle switch with a "rocket launcher" cover on it.
Finished job has the air hose easily rolled up and tucked into the side pocket with the jack.
First real test on the weekend and all went well. Air up on 10 tyres after playing on the beach then a little too much warmth meant the auto cut-out on the compressor kicked in to let things cool down. Plenty of clearance to the plastic trim so no damage from the heat= All good.
Worth a shot if you are after an air compressor that is simple to install and doesn't take up cargo space.
