Nice work Shirl. Not a bad mod for just over $25

Im asuming the strut itself limits the doors end travel,I was just wondering if those type off gas struts would hold up if the door was push beyond its limit by kids(Yes my kids would probably would do that) or even a huge gust of wind

Yes the strut is what now limits door travel. At the moment the mount on the door is not what i would call acceptable but going to have a play around today to try and remedy this. Not sure about the strength of the strut itself. Hopefully i can speak to a strut expert today and he can shed some light as to whether or not he can build in some more damping effect when opening to reduce the risk of it being slammed against the limit of its travel.
        Cheers

Hey Shirl, if you have time, head to a Toyota dealer and have a look at a 150 rear door as they have a strut. Might give you some ideas

            I found a pic of a 150 series door.
It looks more like a dampener than a strut.Maybe some of the 150 people could clarify this
I called a toyota dealership and they dont know sh!t(suprise, suprise)all they could tell me was the part is called a DOOR CHECK and is worth $530

Had a visit with a strut regas guy today, after a couple of goes to get the damping right i think i have a winner. Took the strut i bought and they had a play with the oil level to make the damping happen sooner(approx 100mm before the end of the stroke) so now when the strut reaches full travel it has already slowed right down and doesnt seem to stress anything. Down side is that as they add more oil it also make the thing stronger, it does push the door open itself but then has sufficent strength that i think it will hold it open even with the car nose downhill slightly.
All up this has cost approx $55.00 and a little bit of fiddling. The only fitting detail i have changed is i added a few washers under the ball on the door, this takes out the movement i mentioned earlier and gets the strut on an angle so the oil runs down to the seal.
The guys i spoke to were at STRUTSRUS at Nerang and were very helpful. www.strutsrus.com.au. They can supply the parts required and give a 3 year warranty.
So far very happy with outcome but time will tell.

Thought i would try a put a short vid clip to show how effective the strut mod is. Car is parked with the rear wheels approx 200mm lower than front so door is wanting to throw open pretty hard. Havent tried to do video before so hope it works.

Nice work shirl. When Parked the other way, or next to the gutter with the camber of the road causing the door to want to close, is the strut strong enough to keep it from closing?

The strut actually opens the door for you even with the nose downhill. Would still be nice to be able to lock it open though.

Would the bent washer type thing you see on flyscreen door closer struts that hold them open work?

Would maybe hold it but could also damage the shaft, little burrs, that have to pass through the seal. might be worth a try through.

No that wouldn't work, the screen door is a "closer" and this is an opener so working the opposite direction.

                              Cheers Andrew

I understand Andrew but I was thinking if you open the door all the way and then a bit more, activate the lock at this point as the door will want to spring back to it's natural fully open position and should then lock. Our forklift hoods at work have a plastic 'catch' on the strut to hold it up without damaging the piston. Must take a closer look at them.

                                Cheers Jim.
