Just got all 5 tyres replaced FOC! No contribution despite them having done 20,000km! I did however opt to go to the AT3 instead of another set of ST Maxx for noise reasons.

I had a set of AT3's on my old car that ended up splitting on the side walls and was told it was only cosmetic by the dealer, but one tyre ended up blowing out through the split while I was towing my van at 90km/h!! Got a good pro rata deal on new ones which were fine up until I sold the Patrol and bought the new Prado. Still using the stock tyres but will go to stmaxx soon and see how those go this time. I like the coopers tyre in general but if they split on me again it will be back to BFG's. One more chance....

Do you think the Maxx's are generally loudy Scruffy or just that the AT3's (being less aggressive) will be quieter?

120D4D they are noticeably quieter - you can just hear a bit but the ST MAXXs were akin to an old Land Rover!

What do people think about the old ST/C any run/ran them. I may have a lead on a set of 7 for a very very good price.

I know this is an old post but in case anyone was looking for tyres for their GX now, the S/T Maxx is available in a LT245/75 R17.
If you don't want to run a wider tyre that will handle a variety of conditions and remain fairly quiet on road, than they are a great option and give that bit of extra clearance over standard size.

To add to my previous post, here is a great article explaining the benefits of a narrower tyre for expedition/touring vehicles.

Since my last post a couple of pages back I have done around 45,000km on the st maxx's and in general love them.
Quiet enough on road, great off road and in the wet. The only problem I have is they are wearing only on the outside of the tyre. They've been rotated and wheel alignments done each service. I run mine at 40 psi on road. Not sure why they would be wearing quite badly only on the outside of each tyre. Thought maybe just from city driving and always going round corners and the weight of the car being sent to the outside of the tyre.
                  Thoughts?
Might have to turn the tyres around on the rims and start wearing down the inside of the tyre.......

I run mine at 32 for the front and 36 rears with no problems so far after 30000, they appear to be wearing evenly and haven't been rotated.

Just coming up on 90,000km's on mine, good wear with only one puncture (the nail was THIS BIG!). They've always been a bit sketchy in the wet, but I think most MT and AT tires are much the same.

                      Cheers,

I reckon that might be a symptom of the Coopers. I only ran the old STs on my old 80 series and they did the same (more so on the steer tyres). Some sets knifed up on the outer edge, never rotated them on the rim as I hate the white writing look. Just rotated and moved fronts to back. Still got great wear/km's out of them.

Mine have now done 40,000. Slightly rounded on the outside, but not much more than the inside. Even wear across the tyres. 14mm tread left.

I have been running them mainly at 40-41psi. Lots of round-a-bouts on my way to work. I would think higher pressures would push the wear towards the center of the tyre. Rotate every 10,000 km. I've done a few 4WD trips through the High country and Lidsdale, with a bit of wheelspin from time to time (eg Billy goats)

Some trips done - Cape York, Fraser Island, Simpson Desert / Central Aust, Vic High Country.

Thanks Corigator. Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I have two inch lift which may be only other contributing factor. I assume yours is lifted too?
