  • Dave's 150 Prado GX White D4D Auto

    Hi

I have been lurking, waiting for the delivery of my new Prado, updated from Hilux. I decided on the GX rather than the GXL as i did not want the rear seats and the other items that is would be removing, side steps, roof rails etc.

I ordered the New Prado with Safari Snorkel and the Kaymar Rear Tow Bar Step, while waiting i had plenty of time to crawl everyone's builds so i could get a started as quickly as possible.

    Modifcations so far:
    Safari Snorkel
    Kaymar Rear Towbar step
    8" GPS stereo
    Reversing Camera
    TJM battery Tray
    100A Lifeline AGM Battery
    TJM Side Steps
    AMTS Under body protection
    Redaec 1240 BCDC Charger
    Speedy Avalanche Wheels
    Coopers 265/65 r17 AT3
    Coupler Tec Rust protector
TJM Type 13 colour coded bar
    ARB Compressor

Winch - Premier Winch with Consealed Winch box
    Dual Filter with water Alarm
Leather Steering Wheel with Steeting wheel Audio controls
External outside Power - 25A Anderson Plug

    Planned Mods

2" Lift - Possibly Ultimate Suspension
    Transmission cooler with remote thermostat
IPF Spot Lights - Possibly HID conversion

The first modification was to to replace the stereo with the 8" GPS screen and fit the revering camera to the GX. I did not post pictures of this as it is on other people build so i just posting how i fittted the revering camera.

Having removed all the rear plastic i measured where the original one hwould have come though.

When i was sure where i drilled a pilot hole though the rear door and then the main hole for my water proof plug, protecting to ensure no swarf entered the door.

I then coated the raw surface with white kill rust paint to ensure no rust, even though it is sealed with the water proof plug i did not want a rust issue.

I then installed the 4 pin Waterproof Din plug though the door, the advantage of this is i can remove the camera and then put a cup on the plug if i require, however i do not think i will ever do this..

Then this is the with the finished matching removable plug going to the aftermarket Camera. The Camera was mouned on the original toyota metal bracked which is had to as a 12mm spacer to get the right camera height right. I bought the replacement Genuine matching insert in the tyre wheel cover for GXL.

The Finished 8" GPS screen with the correct left hand drive plug which is orgered from the UK.

I also change the bottom switch selector for the one that comes from the Manual Prado which gived me two more useable switch sockets, which i have fitted the Genuine Diff locker switch.

I finally finished installing the Redarc 40A BCDC battery charger today, I made a custom bracket to support the charger vertically and provide some space to install a fuse box and possibly the diff breathers .

I have some minor touchup painting required to the bracket as the enamel paint does not really stick well to galvanised steel even with etch underprimer. I am also planning on paining the nuts for rust proteciton.

I also installed the optional led charge indication in the dash, so i will know it anything goes wrong.

I installed a 50 A circuit breaker rather than 50A incomming fuse as required by the manual. I used 10mm2 tinned cable fow all wiring and made a custon 35mm2 earth strap between the two batteries.

Planned for next weekend is to get the power to the rear and wire up.

The kaymar rear step looks very neat. Also great idea with the rag to catch the swarf, ,never would have thought of that.

Nice looking build Dave. Is that a rear locker switch from a Kakadu? Are you planing on getting F&R E-lockers?

Yeah you are right Declan, I got this while waiting on the Prado to be delivered, buy things for the car while waiting. I changed the bottom mount piece with a 4 socket from the Manual Prado which gave me space to put the factory diff switch from the Kakadu. I do not have the diff locker in at the moment as other items are consuming cash first. When I decide I will get the Eaton locker again.

I purchased the 50A breaker from EBay Seller, you can also get them from ABR sidwinder but he did not have the 50A version.

Well i finally got around to changing out the standard tryes for some off road ones. I went for the Coopers AT'3 265/65/r17 and the Speedy Avalanche rims

Overall at the moment i am quite impressed with the tyres. The first weekend i got them,i took them 4Wding and got the muddied a litte, now they look like offroad tyres.

Hi Downunder....would you mind clarifying for me please....your new tyre size...are they 265/65/17 (ie same as original) or are they 265/75/17....your email footer says 265/65/17, but your post says 265/75/17..
Also, are the Cooper AT3 "light truck" construction (LT), and, if you don't mind, how much each, fitted and balanced?

I have done nearly 75,000lm on the original Grandtrecks, and am almost ready to replace them...we have been mainly up the beach (fraser Island, Bribie Island, Moreton Island etc), and the Grandtreck AT20 265/65/17 have actually been excellent....but we soon hope to go outback and up the cape again (but mostly we drive on the highway when not on holidays, so we want an AT tyre)....

                        well done

Yeah the are 65 profile, I have corrected my typo. I would recommend them if you are after tyres not not to aggressive but a good all rounder. Yes they are a Light Truck construction.

Last weekend, I almost finished the wiring in the back of the car, having to work in QLD during the week is leaving little time for modifications. I installed 2 merit, one cigarette light plug and volt/amp meter and fuse box into the back compartment. I have only to mount the switch to to turn on/off the meter.
