Starter Motor?

I know two things about electrics - (1) how to turn it on, and (2) how to turn it off!!

A few weeks ago I started to experience some 'click' click' issues when trying to start my 1999 90 series petrol. The battery was starting to bulge a little and the terminals looked crappy so I bought a new battery and converted to brass terminals - all good. A couple of times since then it has 'clicked' when trying to start it but next try with the ignition it was all better.

Today, the battery would crank over the starter fine but then the starter seemed to miss a beat and everything sounded like a flat battery again(????????) turn it over again and away it went. Just did that to me in a servo and the starter seemed to stay on. I turned it off and then back on again and it's suddenly healed itself.

Am I reading in other threads here that the starter can be a problem? Does this sound like one of the common tell-tales??

My 120 was doing the same, not sure of the 90 set up but the 120 has clutch in the starter motor and it was slipping, cost me 400 dollars to replace the starter motor.

Yeah I'd try a new starter motor.

Okay, thanks. I'm ringing the mechanic in the morning to pick up my ute for a service, so I'd better back it up with a request to fix this too. Off to the Flinders in 2.5 weeks - can't get stuck up there!!

Sounds familiar to what the starter was doing on our 120 series V6.
I took it out gave everything a thorough clean up and new grease.
Its back to how it should work.

When i had my 120 petrol the same happened, the replacement was 2kw reduction gear starter motor.... in a different league than the 1.6kw that was in there originally.

Bloody great mechanic. I sent him an SMS this morning (Easter Monday) and he rings me back to discuss it. Has dealt with Prado problem starter motors before so he'll attempt to rectify it and if that fails he'll replace it.
