  • Greg & Kris's 150 GX D4D

    Hi
We have been lurking on Pradopoint for a while and decided that we should start a buildup thread.

As Pradopoint is proving to be a great help with our build up I plan to acknowledge the most useful links in my next post.

Here is a photo when it was just a few days old, at this point we have added a tow bar, dash mat and floor mats.

The plan includes wider wheels, AT3's, UHF radio, Sat nav, reverse camera, side steps, perhaps a bullbar, roof racks.....

      Side Steps

GX's don't come with sides steps. After being rather horrified by the price of factory steps and not liking the alternative ARB steps offered by the dealer I found these on Ebay.

They are stainless steel tube with plastic inserts and metal brackets. They attached in a few minutes to the factory mount holes.

        Wheels

GX's only come with 6.5 inch wheels but we wanted to move to 7.5*17 wheels. We also wanted the camper trailer to have the same wheels, a total of eight new wheels. Clearly the price of eight GXL wheels from Toyota would be astronomic so we went searching for aftermarket wheels. I also wanted to stay legal which meant various 30P offset wheels were discarded. We were quite keen on the Speedy Chariot (notably their catalog features a white GX with chariots fitted), until I showed a picture to a trusted friend. He was polite, saying it was a matter of taste but it caused us to have a rethink. Then we saw yota's 150 build up thread, this post in particular changed our mind.

Our goal was to have the same on the camper, so here is a picture of them both together on the way the the flinders ranges.

              Custom fridge slide and drawers

The goal was to have two separate configurations of the the car (three if you count no fridge at all).
The first arrangement, for off road travelling and holidays, is a fridge on the passenger side and a single large drawer on the drivers side for the recovery gear etc.
The second layout is for on road days trips where we take our two bikes and the fridge. We remove the front wheels of the bikes.

I decided to start with a solid base of 16mm ply (12 was too flexible). The base is 101cm by 85 cm and just sits only the carpet (remember we have a GX, no rear seats). To this base I will bolt a fridge box on one side and either a drawer box or a bike rack to the other side. To make maximum use of the available space both the fridge and drawer boxes hang over the edges of the base. This way they can extend over the lip of the plastic wheel arch covers and part way over the rear door lip without actually resting on the plastic and cracking it.

              photos to come...

              More to come...

The side steps appeared once on ebay, I haven't seen them since. We are very happy with the look of the wheels.

Yota, your photos of the speedy flame wheels, plus your comment that you were happy that chariots were in short supply is what sold us on the flames.

                            Camper Trailer

While clearly not a "part" of our Prado we consider our camper trailer a part or our rig build up, so I thought I would post a few photos. The camper build up also takes time away from the Prado build up.

The Camper is a full off road camper from the Adelaide camper company Far Horizon. Our first change was to add Speedy Flame wheels and Cooper AT3's to be compatible with our car.

The next big step was to construct a slide out kitchen and a storage box. I used a few sheets of 12mm structural ply (marine ply was twice the price). It slides in an out on skids. The kitchen is not the full length of the trailer, a small storage box makes up the remaining space.

Quality looks great, did you "glue and screw"? ;-)

Wheels look really good with nice colour match, Cooper Tyres on the trailer? your spoiling it!

Are you going to fabricate a box for the front of the trailer? maybe cage for generator? you've got allot of room there..

                              Good Work.
