  • V6 Diesel for the 150

This was mentioned in another thread http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...e-V8-diesel-in however I thought it may require its own.

I was informed by my dealer yesterday that a V6 diesel is defiantely on the way maybe as soon as next year.

I wonder how true this is and whether they will maintain the same shape.

Could be an upgrade coming for me if this is true, perhaps the series II 12mths after launch.

Maybe in 5 years when I need to upgrade it will be available!

        Something to look forward to

        Cheers,

I do think Manufactureres need to start going for bigger cubed desiels rather than 4cyl highly strung deisels...The 3.0L Patrol is a fine example of what I'm talking about it relies on boost and an extreme amount of pump pressure etc to make power the Donk is just too small to move a car that big. A good 4.0L V6 low boosted twin turbo'd Prado should do the trick, like the Disco 4 motor but Toyota built so it will actually last.

The 3.0l D4D is a fantastic engine IMO.
If the early 200 series V8 diesel engines are anything to go by, I would be waiting some time for any bugs to be sorted out in a newly released engine.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

One thing you also have to take into account is power to weight ratio

My last ride was TDV6 SE D3.

              This was 140 kw & 440 Nm.

However the D3 is 400kg's heavier than the Prado so the power to weight conversion is almost line ball.

It is interesting that everyone compares the D3 with the 200 series.

Its more direct competitor is the 150 Prado.
              Cheers

Definitely agree. I'd much prefer a 4L six.

The Europeans (VW, BMW, Merc etc) are punching out big power and torque from 2 to 3 litre engines and getting good life out of the engines. It is all a matter of design and materials.

The Europeans also get quality diesel fuel out of the bowsers.A good mate of mine is a top technition for BMW and as much as he rates their diesel motors as among the best in the world he said he flat out would NOT buy a diesel BMW in oz because of the issues our diesel causes to a finely tuned motor.

There is no substitute for cubic inches! Ask any honest mechanic and they will tell you that the new small capacity high output diesels longevity is now similar to petrol engines.

Add to that the high maintainance and repair costs and you have to wonder. The Nissan engine (read European owner) going back up in size is an indication of where the technology I'd going.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

Agreed Richo. When I get out in soft sand with my mates 3.0L patrol (auto) as soon as it drops off boost in sand it comes to a stop it simply cannot give enough torque under 3000rpms this is little motor syndrome a 5.0L V10 VW Tourag I have been out with (tuned 1000nm of torque) did not suffer this problem even off boost...nor does my hard revven V6.
Saying that I do think the D4D in the prados IS a great motor but just needs an upgrade Toyotos knows this and I think a less highly strung bigger cubed motor is the way forward.

I have driven patrols auto and manual, agree that auto suffers a bit. its lower in torque than the Prado by around 30nm for manual and another 30nm lower for the auto. Then manual is the pick for road driving, but hopeless in sand, ie needs revs for torque, then bogs down in sand, cannot turn wheels slowly etc..

I don`t think engine capacity is such a big deal in diesels, a diesel engine is basically just an air pump. Put more air in, put more fuel in get more hp. Air fuel ratio isn`t relevant, until you put in too much fuel and they run hot and they smoke.
Its all about clever turbo charging and strong enough materials, more so than engine capacity.

I wouldn`t mind a 2.5 ltr twin turbo ( one high pressure, one low pressure ) V6 diesel and 6 speed auto. But there is nothing wrong with keeping it simple and reliable and therefore cheaper.

My Prado diesel makes more torque and hp than my dad`s 5ltr VL Calais did, 120kw and 330Nm form memory.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

Richo if I remember correctly the new Nissan with the V8 diesel is massive, bigger than a 200 series and Nissan are planning to sell this alongside the existing Patrol so the 3L hand grenade has another evolution. What is it up to now series VI or VII?
