  • what 2nd battery should i get for 150 series?

    Hi everyone,
I am getting duel batteries wired up and I am just wondering what 2nd battery have people fitted to their vehicles. I have only found a couple of options and not to sure which way to go yet. I want the highest Ah as possible so if anybody can help it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I put a Century MarinePro 720 in my 150 and have been really impressed. I think kulkyne or or someone else did a comparo and the marinepro 650 came out on top. The 720 is a 105Ah deep cycle plus a 700CCA cranking battery as a backup. They are design for marine application so they have platelocks and wingnut terminals as standard. Same $$$s as the Century 105Ah deep cycle, actually I think they are the same battery, except you will pay more for the deep cycle and it only has a 6 month warranty whereas the marinepro has a 3 year warranty.

I have an Optima D27F in my 150. I fitted it in with a tray from FNB-4WD shown here. I needed to massage the air con pipes a bit and we managed to stay friends. Here is a picture of the tray while I was fitting it. Cheers.

A lots been written on this in the forum. Beware the a pipe is double skinned and at least one person has cracked it when bending it, not a cheap repair.

I tried a century pro 720 and it hit against the pipe, so went for the 650 to be safe and it fits perfectly..

Supercharge make a battery that is dual purpose, deep cycle with high cranking amps. I have the 85Ah, but they also make 105Ah. I fitted one of these first up, it rubbed against the A/C pipe, so down sized to the 85Ah. I think the 105 Ah retails for around $220, the 85Ah for around $190??

I mounted a 95Ah AGM in the rear cargo bay. The battery is charged via a redarc isolator and I ran large cable to ensure minimal voltage drop front to back of the Prado. I have an Anderson plug mounted in the back and the battery is contained in a battery box.

Charging is done via 1m of cables with an anderson plug on the end being plugged into the plug in the rear, and I also have an anderson plug on my 240V battery charger and when I get solar panels will put an anderson plug on that too.

It is convenient and easy when in camp as I can take the battery box and fridge out of the back of my car, and use it to plug in lights etc without having the Prado in the middle of my campsite and cables running all over the place. The battery box has a second Anderson plug plus some cigarette lighter sockets and an adapter with a pair of USB power outlets on it to run all my power needs

I remove the battery when at home, charge it fully and leave it disconnected. I will give it a top up charge every month or two if I don't use it in that time.

I went with the battery in the back as AGM's really don't like being in the heat of under the bonnet and it was way too big to put in without bending the air con pipe. By leaving it out of the Prado when not in use it is not continuously charged which shortens the lifespan of the battery substantially. I am hoping to get a good 5-8 years lifespan from one battery

I use an Optima D34 as well. Best thing about the Optimas is when you start the car the charge really quick and charge to a higher capacity than most of the usual.
I had an AllRounder....was not happy with it personally. Would not charge properly, it would drain much quicker than the Optima and when you were driving took much longer to reach an 80% charge. From my own experience the battery was only good from the 80% mark to the 50% mark.

No problems fitting the 720 under the bonnet. I did have to 'customise' a supercheap steel battery tray to accommodate a new mounting point for the AC pipe. I did not need to apply much pressure to move it into position though. It only had to move about a ½". See photos below.
