Have you seen what your opposition (kaymar) have done on theirs? They have a separate tube attached to the vertical post which houses a curly cord.

Ahh you had to say the K word. Anyway, I found this http://www.curlycords.com.au/ The 12V/24V DC cords are 22mm overall diameter but at a length of 1.8m!. Is there one smaller gauge on that website that can be used for LED lighting?
Also, how high should the extension be? Up to the roof line?

Yes I saw this link on the Rear work/spot install thread. They look the goods. I wonder how a telephone curly cord would go? Another option would be the 3.5mm Audio cables on this website. A lot cheaper however I dont know how it (and the telephone curly cord for that matter), would hold up to the elements. Also not sure what the min core size would need to be for say a 27 watt LED worklight. As for the Height, If it's going to be telescopic, then I personally would like to see it at least roof height when fully extended (even just above so if need be, it can be rotated round to the sides toward the front of the vehicle. Obviously of there is a loaded up roof rack that may not be achievable. Anyone else got any ideas?2004 V6 Grande. BLACK -

I like the idea of somehow using a curly cord. I was thinking myself how one could just use one of those tent adjustable pole/spreaders, the kind where one pole slide inside another. It would be better to use the circular kind, not square, so the inner pole could be the swivel and you wouldn't need to swivel the actual light at the top.

Good feedback guys. I've been searching for a good robust telescopic mast when the boss who has a Patrol pointed me to .....
http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/suppo...ication-16704/
Not sure if he fabricates it himself but more research required. It certainly looks heavy duty to me. The boss has seen it but wasn't about to pay that much for it. He's waiting on me to find a good value solution.

I think I've found a good enough extension pole. It is a Glidex G3P9. Here is the brochure for it http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...Q7ww2oRDfqbK_Q
It is available from Bunnings for $33.26 and it extends up to nearly 3m. It is about 1.1m retracted. It comes in 3 sections and the plan is to remove the 3rd section as the tube diameter for the 3rd section may be too small for curly cords and 2 sections is plenty high. The boss was so happy with it that he took it off me and I have to go back to Bunnings to get another one
The pole material is aircraft grade aluminium (according to the brochure which means no rust) and the connectors are only Nylon 66. The poles are fluted (i.e. splined) to prevent rotation, but if you loosen the connectors all the way, you can still rotate the pole.
I'll be designing the bracket so that the pole can be attached using ordinary stainless steel pipe clamps. This way, you can buy your own pole from your local Bunnings to save on shipping. Will have to work out the light attachment point/bracket as there are 2 ways to go about it.
1. Threaded insert into the pole so the light can bolt into the pole but the wiring will enter the pole further down.
2. Make a bracket so that the light mounts in front of the pole and the wiring goes into the pole right at the top.

I think I've found a good curly cord to match the Glidex telescopic pole. It is a Narva B1018BL.
http://www.narva.com.au/products/det...s-popup-layout
The OD of the spiral is slightly smaller than its brother the 81012BL. The texture of the insulation of the 81018BL is also shinier which to me might indicate that it will slide easier inside the tube. Not sure what the material is but it is inside the tube and will be well protected from the elements.
The Narva website indicates that it will stretch to 3.5m which I highly doubt. The curly bit is 0.45m unstretched and it has no problems being stretched to just over 2m - which is about the working height of the telescopic pole with the 3rd stage removed.
I've taken some photos of the pole on the back of the Prado and will upload when I get a chance to. I've also got 2 18W worklights that got sent off today.Last edited by amts; 05-03-2012, 03:42 PM.

Michael,
Have submitted the pole bracket 3D model to the fabricator for their input re: manufacturability. See attached pic.
Will try and get together with wooley to test a paper prototype to make sure the profile of the door on the 150s is still similar. Will try and get in touch with a 90s owner.
I've modified the pole bracket to make it simpler to make. The 2 notches in the angle is to take the pipe clamps.

Here are the photos of what the pole would look like.
Rear view showing curly cord sticking out of the pole.
Side view with pole retracted. With the light mounted, it will be over the roof line but still under my roof rack.
Side view with pole extended
Rear view with pole extended. Nice and high.
Hopefully there will be clearance with the wipers, currently there is some clearance with the tape.

Hi Andrew
I have made up my own rear light which extends 400mm and rotates. It also has a small jerry holder for water to wash hands etc.
It is mounted via the centre of the spare wheel bracket. This may not suit those with wheel covers like yourself-Does your fit with the cover on?
See you when the T/C covers ready
