  • ABS, VSC TRC and VSC OFF lights suddenly came on

Doing the usual Saturday morning trips (Bunnings and Coles) and halfway home I notice the ABS, VSC TRC and VSC OFF lights have all come on!

Definitely not gone through any water anytime recently (let alone today), checked the fuses, etc., and all seem seated properly, brake switch is working (as the lights are still coming on) and not having any problems with the gear selector locking. Looked underneath and can't see anything disconnected - checked the sensors were all seated properly. Disconnected the battery, no change.

Anything else I should be looking at? I guess it could be an ABS sensor - do they just spontaneously fail? Don't have the gear to test out anything electrical, so I'm guessing I'll have to get to a Toyota dealer sometime and get the diagnostics run on it? Didn'tr even hit any potholes that could have caused something to stretch and snap.

Suspension lift has been in for months now with no issue, so I'm expecting that it isn't that a cable suddenly got stretched somehow while driving down a smooth tar road.....

Any suggestions before I got to Toyota and possibly get reamed a new one with their prices?

I'm guessing ABS sensor. Same thing happened on mine about 2 months ago. PM me if you want to hook it up to a diagnostics machine.

Well it got run through the diagnostics yesterday (thanks Oscar!).

Turns out it is the front left corner, which coincidentally is the corner where the mechanics stuffed the ABS cable when installing the 101HD springs. They fabricated a replacement cable at the time (July/August 2011), I can't recall why there wasn't a Toyota replacement (cost or availability perhaps?).

I'm guessing that it is probably the cable that has gone. Looking at the cable from the back of the wheel, there seems to be a lot of electrical tape around it only 10-15cm back from the sensor itself (near the first retaining clip) which suggests to me that the cable has simply been spliced in that area. Nothing similar on the drivers side.

So rather than faff around trying to fix the 'fabricated' one and potentially have the same problem again in the future, I'll be calling Toyota this morning to check on the cost and availability of a replacement cable.......

        Nice surprise.

Rang Toyota, ABS sensor cable cost is $90-odd including GST! Can't be genuine at that price!

Picking it up on the way home today - then we'll see how easy/quick the replacement is......

That price sounds about right... Let me know how you go with the self leveling issue.

            Cheers

              Phil McCarroll at Waitara.

Finally got a chance to do the cable replacement this morning.

Really straight forward, though a little fiddly getting a couple of connectors off and one of the brackets.

Got it back together (removal and install probably took 45 minutes all up - I took the removal slowly to ensure clarity with the replacement process!), took it for a spin up the road, and the lights went out as soon as I hit 40km/h.

Back in the garage, and I jacked it up to check the cable at full extension to make sure that I'd pulled enough slack through to prevent this same thing happening again. All was good.

Now if only I could resolve the self-levelling issue.......
