  • Grinding the disc calipar down

    Hi All,

Just wondering if anybody has ground down their disc calipar in order to fit 16" rims? I have a GX that came stock with 17" steel rims (6" narrow ones) and I would like to fit wider tyres but cannot do it with the current rims. After reading the article on the landcruiser forum "Fittment of 16x8 Roh Trak II rims" its seems possible.....Picture attached.

So has anybody done this or have any opinions / concerns? Thanks.

It used to be a reasonably common practice, but the availability and variety of 17 inch rubber now means that you are better off just getting a set of wider 17 inch rims and fitting 265 or 275 17 inch tyres. Also, following a brief search in the Tyres/Wheels (120 Series) forum I found these threads:

    http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-compatibility

Personally, I think that grinding bits off calipers is dodgey, even if it's only a useless part of the casting. It could also cause issues with roadworthiness and insurance cover.

Thanks for the advice guys. My primary reason was to keep consistancy with the rim size on my campervan. Given the risks with insurance I think I will steer away and live with the difference. Thanks again for your opinions, cheers Grayso.

Whatever it says on your tyre placard you can legally run if it fits. Personally I wouldn't be grinding my calipers.

There is a similar problem with the Discovery 4 3 litre twin turbo in that they could only run 19" rims.
One of the guys on the Aulro forum found a Compomotive rim in 18" that fits with out interfering with the brake calipers.
These rims are also used by Bowler Off road so are strong enough for the vehicle.
It should be noted that on the D4 tyre placard is says that you can run 18" rims (for the TDV6).

Maybe you will be able to source a 16" rim that will fit.
If you do there may be enough interest on this forum to negotiate a better deal as was done with Compomotive for the D4.

            Regards

Not recommended due to insurance... Avoid and stick with suitable rims and tyres that don't require this mod!

I just bought some new genuine 7.5" steel rims from our local Toyota dealer for my Vista Crossover, they were under $120.00 each!

I run 90 series GXL 16" steel rims with no grinding required on my 2003 GX 120. Wouldn't advise grinding, if you take too much off and heavy brake down hill while in the bush... you might pop the inner rubber seal of the brake calliper through the ground part and lose all the fluid and have no breaks for the trip home, but this is all hypothetical of course :-)

It would be handy if you could post a pic of the rim you used and also the width and offset.

The offset of the rims has transformed the 120 quite a bit - much tougher looking. Are those sidesteps off a 90 series?

The side steps were on it when i purchased it in 2008, it did have the GXL 120 alloys in 17's originally.
The wheel sits out a good 50-60mm beyond the arch and being a GX i had to fit rubber flares mostly to stop the stones pitting the paint work due to the tyre pattern. I am happy with its look :-D.
