  • 285 x 70 x 17 Will they fit?

    Guys

Now that VicRoads have enabled a new standard under the guide to modifications for motor vehicles section 13.3 option 1, I am enquiring if 285 x 70 x17 tyres will fit on a 150 GXL Prado with ARB/OME Lift Kit.

The new standard allows 50mm lift & 25 mm radius increase or 50 mm diameter increase.

By my calculations the standard tyres are 777.24 mm diameter & the 285's are 830.58 mm in diameter which is a difference of 53.34 mm.

In my opinion you would be very stiff to get knocked off by 3 odd mm.

Unfortunately the KM2's only come in 265 or 285's.

I apologise if this has been covered before but the threads I found mainly dealt with 265 x 70 x 17.

Your knowledge regarding this tyre size will be appreciated.

    Regards

You may need to lift the suspension for them to fit, which would put you well over the 50mm total maximum lift allowed. You may also need to change the rims for ones with less offset.

Hey Disco4 (by the way your alias makes you sound like a spy).
I have 275/70R17. Not quite your 830mm but at 818 getting close and there is no rub at all. Whether bottoming out, full lock, full articulation etc I haven't managed to get a scuff noise out of them. Visually there's plenty of room and I am also contemplating growing them when they expire.

Tyres are Bighorns & my front suspension is stockasarock - rear wont matter. I'll post a front & rear pic if you want a look.

        Thankyou for the replies.

In Victoria now we are allowed 75mm of lift (50mm suspension & 25mm tyre radius increase which equates to 50mm diameter increase).

I used to have a Discovery 3 & my usual user name was not available on this forum hence Disco4.
I am fairly sure I will buy an Altitude Spec diesel GXL subject to confirmation of pricing.

I would have thought 285's would have been Ok due to the factory 265 width which means the 285's are only 10mm wider on each side of the rim.

        Are 275x 70 x17 BFG AT's available in Australia.

I am researching the tyre sizes for a Prado to get the most out of my Prado.
I can tell you all the tyre sizes that will fit a Disco as had 19's, 18's & 17's on my D3.
        I ended up with 265 x 70 x 17 MTZ's on my D3 which was considered a bigger tyre for that car.

I am trying to avoid multiple tyre & wheel combos for the Prado by using the experience with in this forum.

My apologies, Vic Roads has indeed adopted VSB14 as the standard. The 275/70/17 will probably be OK, but with minimal clearance from the upper control arm at full lock. A 285/70/17 is arguably legal but may need a rim with a reduced offset of ET20 to clear the upper control arm at full lock.

There is a guy on here with a 150 shorty who's got 285/70 17s with a 2 inch lift. He's got different rims though. Think the offset was +6mm.

Well I may have answered my own question.

I was told by a reputable tyre dealer with heaps of 4x4 experience that 285 x 70 x 17's will fit.
He confirmed that there was adequate clearance of the upper control arms & that they would comply with VSB 14 so therefore legal.

I fitted 2 inch lift over the weekend and prado is booked in today to get tyres fitted

Will see how it goes, only thing is i will have to make up a bracket to space out the spare on the back.
