  • Cooper st tyres rubbish 111

have had my cooper st tyres since nov 2010 done 30000 km approx , the last 5000 or so kms i have noticed bad chiping round the side of the tyres on all four mind you, plus cracking down inside the tread , some on the knobs are nearly pulling off , i went to coopers to see what they could do , they didnt want a bar of what was wrong with my tyres putting it down to not the right tyre pressures , i dont even do much 4x4 all my driving with these tyres has been done mostly on the road , and if i do go off road i always put them down to about 25 psi on the dirt .
so all i have to say is dont buy cooper tyres they are good for the first 20000 or so but after that it seems the compound becomes britel , maybe thats why they have to advertise all the time on tv !!!!!!!

No, but with the amount of Coopers lovers around.....

I've gone with Yokohama Geolander A/T's. They don't seem to get mentioned much. If money was no object i would get Mickey T's 4 ribs, but the Yokies were about $100/tyre cheaper makes an extra $500 in my pocket

My tyres are only about 8,000k's old but so far so good

          Cooper st tyres rubbish 111

Gidday lets go places, i put the yokos on my 95 around 5 years ago after they were recommended by a tire place and had no issues with them after 70,000 ks when i traded up so you should be fine. Regarding the coopers, i have for the first time put the cooper AT3 discovery on my 120 Prado as like you not all the press regarding coopers was good but every one seemed to be raving about the newly launched AT3 which temped me to try them, anyway i have clocked up over 30,000 ks so far and i am very happy. So time will tell if they get the mileage they advertise but hadly anywear after 30k so maybe they will get to 80-90k.

          Regards

I thought Mickey was a subsidiary of Coopers as was Dick Seepage, they are all out of the same factory so one isn't any better than Coopers they are the same

Have heard / read about this alot with coopers, (do a search) If Mickeys are from the same company ?? then based on pricipal I wont be buying them either. I had coopers on my first wheel drive as I thought they were the ants pants, give you long klms etc have never had them again and never will. If its true about Mickeys then I will go the bf's like I have for the last 10 years.Cheers Steve

IMO most of it comes down to how you use it... I know few people who got 80,000KMs with Coopers and had no issues and some only 40,000 and they are about to go....

                Following are just a few variants;
Correct tyre pressures, short/long trips, where you park the car during the day time, load, rotating them and how you drive.

If we have 6 vehicles at an event and 1 has tyre problems, they will be using coopers.

i have the STTs on my 95, clocked nearly 50,000kms on them and have no issues, just wear on the front of the tread blocks (caused by spinning on rough rocks) appart from that they are wearing great for mud tyres, wouldnt supprise me to get 80,000 kms plus out of them. but like said before alot of factors come into it, its parked mostly in the shade, i go pretty easy on them and avoid tyre spin where i can.

also i think cooper use a diffrent rubber compound on the more offroad orientated tyres, i know the chip resistent St and the STT use a tougher more durable rubber compound.

I had ST's on my last 4x4. Had bucket loads of grip and got great mileage but I did have the same problem with chipping.

When the tyres had only done about 10,000 km I did a trip to the Flinders and when we returned there were quite a few large chips missing out of the tread blocks. I was since told that lowering the pressures on dirt/rocky roads (of which there are many in the Flinders) will help reduce any chipping (I think I was running about 30psi on most roads appart from rough low range 4x4 tracks where I went lower).

I recently did another trip to the Flinders with my new Bridgestone D694's which I had at around 25psi for the whole trip and there was no damage at all, not sure if that is because of the pressuers or the difference in the tyres.

I agree, and if you read a thread where someone is complaining about their tyres, it is usually Coopers! There must be something in that.

Cooper brought out the ST-C which was designed to resist chipping. From their marketing blurb, the ST-C is meant for more off-road oriented work than the ST. Just saying ......

hi andreas are they the same ones that you used on the creb with me . because i followed you all day and thought those tyres are absolute c*#p for off road tyres . don't know about anyone else but i don't want to be getting 80 000 ks out of a set of off road tyres .it stands to reason that if they last longer they are made off a harder compound , this suprisingly usually means less grip on any surface and more prone to chipping or cracking . but thats just my opinion . amazing ive now met 4 people who are extremely happy they no longer use this brand .

I have said it before on the forum, many times over the years...... I must be one of the lucky ones (or know what tyre pressures to run)...... as I am on my 4th set of Coopers over three different 4WD's (an 80 and a 100 previously) and currently run ST's on the Prado, which have done just over 80,000 and probably still have another 20 or 30k left in them...... go figure
