His other question relates to the winch not working, others have answered this question and so I didn't feel the need to repeat what they had said, but for the record. A winch is a pretty simple piece of kit, no fancy Hi tech gizmo's to confuse you, check that it is wired correctly, check that the connections are all tight and clean, maybe get the battery tested to make sure that is ok, although if it starts the Prado it should at least run the winch a bit.
If the wiring and the battery are OK and correct then it is in the winch, if the winch is new then take it back for warranty, if it is secondhand and has no warranty, pull it out and pull it apart and check for obvious problems, once again a winch is not a complex thing to dismantle if you are handy with the spanners.

Probably the only new advise I might offer is this, he mentioned that the lights dimmed when the solenoids clicked, I would turn off the lights, radio and anything else not essential when winching, you need all the power going to the winch rather than others things that are not essential.

I find offering advise on generic "how should I set things up" questions easy, offering trouble shooting advise, particularly on electrical problems often seems difficult to me, and I will give you a good example.

At the GTG in QLD earlier this year Hutch had an issue with his Prado not starting, the started motor kicked in and spun but didn't engage. My thoughts were that it was the starter motor, I crawled under the Prado, checked for loose connections or any other obvious problems, checked the battery terminals etc etc. I really was a bit stumped until I tried starting it myself, the second I turned the key I knew what the issue was, it was a dodgy ignition switch, I could feel it. I could spend hours talking someone through that problem over the net and never have solved it because sometimes you just need to be hands on.

    Cheers Andrew

As a last resort I would go back over the wiring to check for correct polarity. I recently worked on my brother-in-laws anchor winch on his boat, after he replaced the solenoid. Same setup as a winch except working off a console mounted switch, up for retrieve, down for lowering.

Had something similar in that there was sortof a click so we initially thought there was an issue with the solenoid but finally realised that the cables to the winch were reversed and for some reason the motor wouldn't turn (I would have expected it to go in reverse). Reversed the cables and voila, one happy boater.

Might be worth one last look, or get someone else to have a look over the setup. I've been caught not seeing the wood for the trees so to speak.

In any case if you take the cables going from the winch motor and connected them straight to a battery you should see some sort of activity. If you use jumper leads you can at least quickly disconnect or reverse if need be.

                Good luck!

                  futher update...
I was driving out the back of my block and the lights dimmed and died and in the moonlight we could see smoke coming from under the bonnet. So i popped the bonnet and the winch +'ve Cable was melting itself to oblivion! Grabbed the tools out the back and disconnected the battery and the melting stopped. I did try to start it after reconnecting the battery without the winch cable, but no go. Ended up walking out to the road after sitting next to the prado waiting for it to catch fire.

Got it towed back to geraldton and now I'm fighting toyota over it as they installed it. I'll upload photo's soon but in essence when they installed it they samwiched the power cable between the winch cradle and another bracket, where it wore through the insulation and dead earthed direct to the frame. Back fed through the engines earth and blew it apart. photo's explain better than I could.

That was my biggest fear, thats why I went a little overboard with making sure it was all well insulated, but better safe than sorry.

Which considering you paid a dealer to do it, makes it even worse.
