Thanks guys for your sugestions and I'm glad this has engendered some interesting disscusion.

The cables I'm using came with the winch so I was assuming that they were up to the job but I will take some pics and post back for comment.
I do plan on getting a second battery in the future but as most of my 4x4 trip are local atm that will probably be after my rear locker gets done.
I did try winching in hi gear and low gear and in neutral (on the winch as it's a 2speed) but i will try again.
As this is a brand new winch I would hope that the solonoids are A1...
And I did try to winch with the engine running at 2500rpm sitll no go.

Thanks guys I'll try and work on it after work and next break (after wednesday).
    pics to come!

Sounds like the winch is either wired wrong or faulty. You need to check the wiring first.

We are just coming at this from differing viewpoints, and as you say its upto people to make their own mind up on who is offering the best advise for their particular situation.

so what advice could you give to Syzprado AJ ?

He had 2 questions, I think I have made it pretty clear that I believe the cranking battery on its own will get the job done as far as most winching situations goes.

His other question relates to the winch not working, others have answered this question and so I didn't feel the need to repeat what they had said, but for the record. A winch is a pretty simple piece of kit, no fancy Hi tech gizmo's to confuse you, check that it is wired correctly, check that the connections are all tight and clean, maybe get the battery tested to make sure that is ok, although if it starts the Prado it should at least run the winch a bit.
If the wiring and the battery are OK and correct then it is in the winch, if the winch is new then take it back for warranty, if it is secondhand and has no warranty, pull it out and pull it apart and check for obvious problems, once again a winch is not a complex thing to dismantle if you are handy with the spanners.

Probably the only new advise I might offer is this, he mentioned that the lights dimmed when the solenoids clicked, I would turn off the lights, radio and anything else not essential when winching, you need all the power going to the winch rather than others things that are not essential.

I find offering advise on generic "how should I set things up" questions easy, offering trouble shooting advise, particularly on electrical problems often seems difficult to me, and I will give you a good example.

At the GTG in QLD earlier this year Hutch had an issue with his Prado not starting, the started motor kicked in and spun but didn't engage. My thoughts were that it was the starter motor, I crawled under the Prado, checked for loose connections or any other obvious problems, checked the battery terminals etc etc. I really was a bit stumped until I tried starting it myself, the second I turned the key I knew what the issue was, it was a dodgy ignition switch, I could feel it. I could spend hours talking someone through that problem over the net and never have solved it because sometimes you just need to be hands on.

                      Cheers Andrew

Actually Andrew, the issue came back this week and was actually the starter motor, it has a clutch in the starter motor and apparently if it gets to much shit in their ie sand, the clutch will slip, hence the inconsistency with starting. The starter got replaced on Friday.
I still appreciated your help though on the day.

                          Hi Hutch,

I had to get the starter motor in my 2006 GXL V6 replaced under warranty also & I had heard that it was a fairly common thing for the V6 's but not so for the D4D's.

Has anyone else heard of this?

                          Cheers

U r spot on lawrie for some reason it is only v6 that seems to be an issue, at 400 dollars not a real big issue in the scheme of things.

Well there you go Hutch, my initieal thoughts were correct after all, Imust say though that your ignition felt funny to me, anyway the main thing was we got it going and you were able to lead the trip

This does reinforce a couple pf points though

                              1. Electrical diagnosis is difficult, even if you are hands on.

                              2. Diesels are superior to Petrols come on Hutch, admit it You know its true

                              Cheers Andrew

Haha AJ I would still rather pay $400 bucks for a starter motor than thousands+ for new injectors, fuel pump, turbo blah blah blah!!'
