Unfortunately I see this too often, we wouldn't get our brakes repaired at the local Auto leccie, but we'll get things wired up at Dealer or by a "Qualified accessory fitter" (didn't realise there was a trade or course in accessory fitting!!).

My last job we had 2 Troopies while I was there, and as they were leased, we had the accessories fitted as a part of the sale. First troopie's winch didn't work as it wasn't earthed, 2nd one was even better, we had to remove the 2nd battery to fit some or our accessories, and happened to notice the battery terminal didn't look right.

    Another fire waiting to happen!!

People forget that you can weld with 1 car battery (2 works better), and as such they deserve respect.

Other than staying out of the electrical battery discussions as they consistantly do my head in...

I never thought that it was overly difficult to get an electrical installation working, even if the actual aesthetics never quite measure up.

Surely a technican can figure the following?
      1. clamping the insulation is STUPID at a battery terminal!
      2. compressing a cable between metal parts is also STUPID!

1CB, you can never have enough split tubing, and we should buy shares in the company that makes the stuff...

Toyota don't want to know ablout it...
So I'm going to wire it up myself. At least I'll know it's done right!
So i've gone out and got myself some 2 guage cable 16mm split tubing and a 400amp isolator
I'm intending to isolate the winch when it's not in use.

Any tips, tricks, things to watch out for or advice in general?

I will try and take lots of pics and post for others reference.
Next on the list is to rewire the spotlights as that wiring isn't the neatest either.

              update
wired up the winch using 2 guage wire on the positive side to the isolator and from the isolator to the control box.
used 3bs wire to replace damaged negative wire.

              result
winch worked for 2 minutes then fried another wire

at least i know the isolator works!

I should have updated this a long time ago...

Toyota didn't want to hear about it saying they never connected the winch to the battery.
Aside from the very poorly routed wire causing the first meltdown, it turns out that when they wired up the control box they got the wires the wrong way around and it was arking across allowing the winch to get some power.
Long story short I made up all new wires but I forgot the take note of where each one went...
So I had to go back to the installation manual (that I had left on the front seat when Toyota installed my winch and they didn't bother to look at??) and wired it up myself.
                Now It Works...
                It Was Simple...
Why didn't I just do it myself in the first place...
