  • I don't think bolting would be a good idea as it would increase the stress concentration factor if the holes are drilled into the guard near the bottom lip. I would consider building a new "bridge" to have the battery mounted to it and the "bridge" would span the entire wheel arch.

Nice idea and I've looked at it but very difficult to implement.

      • Hi Krypro,

I have not seen a new style inner guard yet but from what i can see the 2nd skin looks like an addition to the original guard, does that sound right? I wonder if toyota would sell just the second skin part and spot weld these onto the original 150 inner guard?

        • The guard in question looks to be 53701 and 53702 in toyodiy, called apron sub-assembly

Interesting to note the 2 different part numbers for different years.

Interesting, a friend has recently purchased a 2014 model, it appears to be the updated model with the new features.

However when I checked the inner guards it appears to have the same as my 2012 and not the newer style mentioned in Krypto's post.

Will have to check more closely what model he has when I see him next.

            Cheers

When we had a look in the yard we saw two 2014 models with the old style guard and the rest had the new guard. We thought it was probably Toyota using up old stock of the guards before moving to the new design.

Given the low number of guards that crack it was probably cheaper to use up all the old design guards.

The top of the guard is identical between the two designs, the only difference is the shape of the stress bearing lip which has had all holes removed, has a rounded bottom and has a short backing strip in the high stress area.

Looks like it changed in 2011, maybe Oz is just the last place to get the change?

They are part numbers for the petrol. Haven't checked whether the diesel has a different guard, there don't seem to be any petrol models with cracked guards on this forum.

The diesels have the same part numbers too

                    • Surely now that Toyota have changed the design they concede fault on their part and will honour warranty for any failure?

                      • Surely if you were to be unfortunate enough to have to go to court with the issue now with Toyota changing the design would show that there was an issue with previous design being a fault.... Cheers Steve

                          • Here's how I see Toyota handling it. The new model was never advertised as having different or stronger guards so you can't say you bought it expecting it to have them. Secondly they will never admit there was a fault with the old ones. Thirdly when questioned why the design was changed they will say they are always continually improving there cars and over time and model changes they will make improvements.

Yep, it's that old "features and specifications are subject to change without notice" chestnut.

                              • Prado 150 cracked guard patch kit

A quick update for anyone with this problem. Toyota have a patch kit for cracked guards that provides a very neat and permanent fix.

The repair looks at least as strong as the new 150 series guard as it creates a double skin through the whole high stress area. It is my understanding that the cause of the cracks may not be overload as much as sustained vibration, so a good reason to watch tyre pressures on corrugations and to avoid excessively hard after market suspension. I guess that might also be why there is an issue with heavy bull bars as they add to the load and vibration in the front of the vehicle on rough and corrugated surfaces.

Also worth mentioning that the V6 has the battery on the other side to the diesel, and for some reason the drivers side seems less prone to cracking.

Picture below is of the patch kit fitted, it's almost impossible to see as it is like a second skin under the guard. The only give away is the slightly larger hole cut-outs over the existing holes and the extra bolts and nuts around the guard that hold the patch in place.
