Just did the injectors on my wifes car... its a 2007 GXL with about 140k kms. We noticed smoke when starting on a hill about 6 months ago but it was a one off so we never worried about it, then it started rattling and smoking more frequently on cold starts and after a bit of googling I ended up finding this thread
The seals on injectors 1,2 & 4 were shot and 3 looked on the way out and the top of the engine had a fair amount of carbon floating around. I pulled the sump and the pickup looked almost completely blocked so we were lucky to catch that as I'm pretty sure it was close to going bang.
Cost just over $2k for denso injectors and new seals, but I also spent a few hundred more on lifter buckets to fix four valve clearances that were out of spec and a new timing belt and tensioner seeing as the cams had to come out anyway. Next week gotta go and pay to get the calibration codes entered.
Did all the work myself.. was a pretty fiddly job but didn't have any major problems. Cleaning the injector holes was definely the lowlight. 2 hours crouched in the engine bay scraping out carbon and trying to stop in falling into the cylinders!

Hello All,have not posted for along time, just to add to let you know the history with my the injectors,2007 D4D, 4 injectors replacsd at 60000 th, 2 at 110000,2 at 130000, all under warranty, the vehicle will be 5yrs old in February, using my after market warranty, the injectors are all being replaced, with new pipes & seals through my local Toyota Dealer, they assured me I am getting the latest injectors & seals, this is going to cost me about a 1/3 of the cost of going through a diesel injector service, as my warranty does not cover the full amount, would like to think this problem will be solved for 100000 kys plus, with the updated injectors. I am considering myself as one of the lucky ones... Lucky that the awesome people and information on this forum led me to check my oil pickup screen.
2007 with about 120k on the clock.
So close to being completely blocked it wasn't funny.
It's a bit better now:
I've since installed a catch can, and I've ordered new injectors, seals and associated bits. Looking forward to tackling this one myself (like everything else so far).
Cheers,
Jeremy

I bought an inspection camera from Autobarn for $110-ish. Drained the oil then put the inspection camera up the sum hole. I couldn't make sense of anything I was seeing on the camera at the time so I decided to pull the sump off anyway. Turns out because it was so gunked up, all I was seeing was BLACK. If it is clean, it will be pretty easy to see that it's clean I think.
Others have mentioned that it might be possible to check with a mini mag light and good eye sight.
Cheers,
Jeremy

I changed the injectors out about 3 weeks ago now, i've been meaning to post some pictures up but haven't had a chance yet. In short, No1 & 2 seals had failed (No1 o-ring had completely perished), 3 & 4 didn't look too bad (to my untrained eye).
I checked the oil pickup again after I changed out the injectors. To my amazement, even though it was only 6 weeks since I cleaned it last there was a massive amount of build up again.
Hopefully with new seals, injectors, fresh oil and a clean screen she'll be all good for a while.
Jeremy.
