Pete, make sure you check the fuel tanks, fuel pod. It appears that is where the issue starts. If you dont fix that, you might just have the same problem again
      ...........Heaps of cool stuff

It's the dirty fuel that comes in the fuel tank, The fuel pod (like a container) sits inside the fuel tank and has a motor to pump fuel to the motor. Algae grows inside the fuel pod which sits inside the fuel tank. As the fuel pod has a pump which pumps fuel to the motor, it creates heat which the algae grows on, therefore you need to you clean the fuel pod. It's Algie which is causing all these problems.
the photo's I posted in this thread are from the fuel pod.
My insurance company is covering the entire cost of repairs and cleaning and replacing everything associated. Cost $12,000. It will only cost me $500.
So yeah, dont just fix the injectors, fix the actual problem. Even better, take it to Toyota and get them to assess it and get your insurance company to fix and replace the entire system.

            Hi all,

I have a quik question, I've been having problem with the injectors lately. And was wondering how much is
the calibration for the injectors in a 1KZ-te 3.0? And is the calibration in Lbs? I don't know the mechanical term for that.
Any help would be appreciated, because I am tired with the injector issue with my prado.

            Cheers.

Thanks for that, how is the algae getting past the fuel filter? If algae is a problem then why not recommend a fuel treatment? I always use to treat the fuel in my Riv to prevent algae growth and did not beleive this to be a problem in cars as the fuel system is sealed to the atmosphere.

I have an 09 120 series D4D and it has in my opinion had a problem with rattle from day 1. I would call it diesel pre ignition rattle, I was told it is just the way that Toyo have designed the system to reduce emissions when cold. It is not getting worse. Is this the injector problem talked about here is is this just normal for any healthy D4D? Can't say I am impressed.

I have a 150 with the latest injectors. I also have a very loud metallic noise coming from the injectors when cold, I hate the noise but it's not getting worse. It's noticeably louder than my mates D4D and the ones I drive for work.

I get Toyota to check it at every service and so far in spec. To their credit my local service manager has been really good and gone out of his way to help, however unless the injectors go out of spec there is nothing they can do. At least I've got the extended warranty and I'll probably sell it when that runs out. Only real flaw with a great car.

Without rereading all the threads, what are the in spec values for the injectors?

Krypto, my engine is noisy when cold but only under load not at idle. I'm told by my dealer that this relates to the cold air temp inbound to the engine before it warms up thus the reason it only occurs on very cold days prior to engine warm up. This theory seems to hold true in my case as on warmer mornings the noise is less noticeable if at all.

Riv39 I have the same issue but the noise really doesn't sound right. Having a mechanical background its a bit of torture listening to it in the morning.

If you have any doubts, go and listen to a new Prado or Hilux. I recently drove a brand new Hilux. It was quiet, sweet and had plenty of power so I know what to expect. My Prado was only ever occasionally rattly on a few of the cooler mornings out in the desert but within a couple of minutes the noise abated as it is expected to do. The final "bang" was totally unexpected.

just replaced my injectors 1 month ago (no warranty 105000ks) we have had a couple of cold mornings ice on windscreen and it makes no noise, music to my ears
mine was also less noisy on warmer mornings
if you get Toyota to test them make sure they do a cold start and drive as mine were within spec at idle and no load (revved it netrul) after I got them to test it again and take it for a drive striaght after start up all injectors were way out of spec.

Talked to my service manager about this on Friday and booked in overnight next Tuesday for tests.

The manager was well aware of the problem and really helpful. After reading bushbasher's story I've decided to really go after Toyota on this. Heading up north with a camper soon and really don't want to be worrying about this.

Sounded like some had a hammer under the bonnet this morning, really hate listening to it.

Thanks to everyone on the forum for all the information, it means I'm going in a lot better prepared.

Bushbasher where is your car being fixed? Also I've reread the rattle thread and I'm still not clear on what caused your engine failure.

My car is being repaired at Goldfields Toyota in Kalgoorlie. Apparently the engine failure was caused by injectors going out of specification, over-fuelling and blowing a hole in number 1 piston and number 4 piston is cracked. There is no evidence of injector seal failure. The car was routinely serviced at the same delaership and serviced only 4 weeks before the failure at 73,700km.
