  • 3 Battery's under the bonnet

    So I was wondering.....
I have a 120series ARB D4D daul battery setup. Front left is my Start battery, with my AUX in the rleft rear of the engine bay near the windscreen, lookigng from the drivers seat
So I have the front right behind the headlight free(where some people have their batterys, not withshnding the potential for guard cracking etc) Is there any reason I cant put a third battery in there and wire it in parrell to my current Aux battery. Would require about 8 feet of cabling to my current aux battery i guess
So then I could get say 2 x 80 AHr deep cycle batterys in there. just wondering
Anyone else run 3 battery setups

    Cheers

I gather you have a 120 series from your other posts, not sure about your left and right descriptions above. Start battery is normally left front, ARB battery is normally left rear and many people also mount a battery in right front. No reason you can't put 3 batteries in, I have seen it before in a Prado. Forum member Hibbo has 3 batteries under the bonnet....... whether it is a good idea or not is another question.

    Cheers Andrew

Ahr yes you are right, I was looking from the front of the car. So to prevent confusion I have changed my post , assuming I am looking from the drivers seat. Great thanks for the info Andrew. I cant get a big battery in the rear left spot where the aux is due to space restrictions, biggest I can get is about 60-80 AH. Just thinking thats all.

The front right space is used by the V6 owners as there is no space rear left unless you do some serious moving of things. Why not fit one front right (where you can fit a full size battery) and use the ARB tray (rear left) to permanently fit a compressor as other Diesel owners have done? Just a thought

What the heck are you going to do with 3 batteries? Seriously, if 2 isn't enough then maybe you should look at exactly what you really need to be using - electronic wise - out bush. One bettery will run everything whilst the vehicle is in motion. Most of us run a second battery to give peace of mind whilst out scrub and for mainly running the fridge to keep the tinnies nice and cold. The aux will run the fridge all day then before going to bed, run the engine to top up the aux. Then, turn down the thermostat on the fridge over night. On my engel I can turn it down from freeze to about 2.5 on the scale and it will keep it happy all night. Then I run the engine again first thing and that will do for the day. Of course with the camper trailer the onboard batteries are charged free from the sun via solar panels. This alleviates the need to run the car.

Ah ha 3 batteries under the hood. luv it.
Go your hardest or just use the rear cargo instead.
I run 100a/hr AGM in the rear, have throught about 2 in the rear at times, but the one 100a/hr seems to fair o.k. for 3-4days if you're parked up and going no where. If you need more than alternative to this could just be a larger Aux battery say 120 or 150a/hr.

            cheers

At this stage it was just a question to see if others had done it. I have repalced my start and aux battery (so stuck with a 65AH deep cycle battery as you are limited to a 250mm battery with ARB dual battery passenger bay setup) so will see how they now hold up before deciding if I go further. I mounted my compressor up near the ABS, so I have my space free if I NEED it in the future though to mount a Exide ED5 (75AH) in parallel to the current aux battery. No reason I can see that it wouldn't work, so it would give me a total of 140AH.

Keep in mind the amount of weight you are putting over your front suspension. Every bit affects your ride height and quality and therefore the ability of your suspension to cope over extended periods. Most people then put harder springs to get the ride height correct and that puts more stress on your suspension components.

Each battery adds probably 30kg of weight.

                Just something to consider.

Good points Tasie Tiger, allthough I already have it lifted with HD suspension etc in there. The third battery would weigh 19 kgs. But will decide what I want to do on this a little later after I have teste my new batterys first
