  • Rear awning 1.2x2m $154 + $27 freight

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/220891821...84.m1423.l2649

I've been looking for an awning now that I have a sail track built into the new Platform Rack I've got. Went to a local place to get something made up that can slide into the sail track and they want $270 for it ! That's just for the sail rope sewn to the material and a spreader bar at the end. Doesn't even come with a bag or telescopic poles.

Found the ebay item above and I asked the seller if it has the posts that fold up and also the posts on the sides to keep the edges rigid. Reply was that everything is the same as the others, it is just not branded.

If anyone has bought one before and would like to post a review before I hit the Buy it now button

Or if anyone wish to do a group buy for Adelaide, I might contact the seller to see what he can do.

I assume that it is the same as with other side awnings in that it has 2 T-slots on the extrusion behind the bag where you slide square head bolts in. Then its L-brackets to the roof rack. Obviously, I can't use the sail track on my roof rack anymore, so I'll just drill through the planks on my platform rack.

amts do you need/want both a side and rear awning? It would be cheaper to make up a bracket to let you spin the side awning around the way I have done.

I'm looking at the rear awning for more regular use. Sometimes, we are getting caught out outside waiting or chatting and need some shelter from the sun or rain. The smaller rear awning looks to be faster to erect than the side awning I have which will only be put on when on a trip. The rear awning might be more permanent.

The sellers tell me I need wider areo bars for the 1100 rack.

I want 1200 or 1500 x 1100 rhino with 2 cross bars and a 2.5 meter foxwing, such that I can undo the cross bars and remove the whole unit. The 1200/1500 is so I can still escape out of the moonroof if required.

                  2 questions:

                  1. Not sure if its possible. What length are your cross bars?
                  2. Would this also work with the new type flat tray rhino racks?

I am asking you because you have done at least part of this and of course made your own and have an engineering backgropund. (and make kick-ass bash plates )

                    Rob,

Your cross bars are 1160mm long. The one Toyota now sell for the 150 are 1250mm long.
Mine are now 1375mm long. It is the Rhino Aero type, 3 bars, and fix directly to the roof after removing the factory rails.

The new Rhino Pioneer Platform rack designed specifically for the Prado requires the removal of the factory rails and buying the 6 feet and legs to suit the platform.

However, you can buy a short version of the Pioneer rack for utes:
                    http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCategory_Pioneer-Alloy-Platform-Racks_Page_1_Accessory_Pioneer-Alloy-Platform-Rack_487_68.aspx

And use a fitting kit to attach to heavy duty bars:
                    http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCategory_Pioneer-Alloy-Platform-Rack-Accessories_Page_1_Accessory_Heavy-Duty-Attachment-Plate-Kit_498_70.aspx

But it means that you still have to change from your Sportz bars to heavy duty bars. This method also adds height.

As you are intending to install a Foxwing, I don't think the 2 sportz bars are adequate as the furthest apart they can go is about 1m. There will be a lot of overhang at the front.

Personally, I would go for the Pioneer Platform Rack (42102) attached permanently to the Prado (or just take it off with only 6 screws) and use this Foxwing kit to attach it to the rack:
                    http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCategory_Pioneer-Alloy-Platform-Rack-Accessories_Page_1_Accessory_Foxwing-and-Sunseeker-Awning-Bracket_493_70.aspx

You will lose the escape hatch but If we're going on a trip, you're definitely going in first with winch cable already attached to 120D4D. I think you're just paranoid.

                      Amts.
Thanks for the 120 page review with pictures
Paranoid, maybe but you have not seen me driving through mud, and remember the other little lady who accompanies me for the plate fit up? Well she lays down certain rules like:
                      1. "I want to be able to see out of the pretty moonroof." and
2." ..and if we go through there, how the hell do I get out when the walls are blocking the doors? You will be attaching your own winch to whatever tree because I am not digging the wall out just to rescue you when you got us into this mess, etc etc etc........."
