  • flashing and continous indicator lights on the dashboard

    Hi all,

I'm posting this for a friend who has a 2010 Prado 150 series D4D diesel. A few days ago the 4LO and differential lock indicator lights on the dashboard started to flash while the VSC and ABS continuously lights up. We tried to disconnect the battery hoping to reset everything but it did not work.

The truck runs normally. The car would go into 4LO and back to 4HIGH but the 4LO indicator light still flashes even if it is in 4HGH.

I would appreciate any of your suggestions regarding this matter before we bring it in a Toyota service center here in Manila as the truck is a gray market ( Dubai version ).

    Best regards,

    Nonong

That is indicative of a "limp mode" situation. Usually restarting the car will allow the vehicle to run normally, however the lights will continue to flash for at least another 5 or 6 restarts (if the problem that caused it has gone away). A Toyota tech can also reset the ECU with a scan tool and also advise what caused the fault.

      Hi VXWesty,

The vehicle has a Chip-It chip that we installed about a month ago but this only happened last week. We also removed the chip and it still had the flashing lights so we connected it back. Could the chip have caused this malfunction ? I see that you also have the Chip-it chip. Do we need to remove the chip for an ECU reset ?

Yes, it is extremely likely at the Chip-It caused the problem. I have had that same issue, along with a few others, but it was remedied by Chip-It over here. They use a new style of wiring harness that draws of the 5 volt rail and also changed the chip module to work on the new 5v feed. The new harness also has small ferrite suppression rings at each end to help identify it.

Check out the Chip-it thread on this forum and you'll find heaps more info.

Don't be put off by your experience... It's a great product.

Disconnecting the battery for about 15-20 minutes will clear fault codes caused by the chip.

            VXWesty,

Before my friend got this chip, I went over the different threads in this forum about the issues with the chip. I thought it was already sorted out that's why I recommended it to my friend. I also did not encounter any malfunction when I installed a Chip-It chip since early this year in my LC200 V8 TTD that's why I'm a bit surprised with this malfunction. Anyway I already emailed Robert of Chip-It regarding this matter and hopefully I will have an answer on how to go about it soon.

            barryswanson,
We already disconnected the battery for 20 mins but the malfunction is still present afterwards.

Is your friends Prado a 3.0 or 2.8L engine?

Did it run ok for a bit with the chip on or did it play up straight away?

The chip arrived one month ago last October 22 and we installed it right away. The error only appeared last Tuesday morning when he started the vehicle. He is till using the truck daily and it runs normally.

We just found out what the culprit is on why the 4LO and Diff Locks indicator lights are flashing while the VSC and ABS indicators continuously lights up. The chip was not the cause. It was a wire on the rear left wheel. It seems a mouse ate/bit the wires off. After reconnecting the wires and disconnecting the battery to reset the ECU, everything was back to normal.

I would also like to mention that the guys at Chip-It were very helpful while we were still trying to diagnose the problem specially Justin.
