18' Tyres - What to get

I fitted a full set of Copper AT3's LT275/65R18 to my ZR recently and have been very impressed with them.

I went with the light truck version as my stock tyres copped a fair bit of side wall damage off road which eventually caused them to fail. They are well behaved on road, I would almost say as good if not better than stock. There is no comparison off road, the Cooper is the far superior tyre.
I would have went for a Cooper ST Maxx but there wasn't a close enough 18" size and I didn't want to go that aggressive. The Cooper AT3 is certainly much more aggressive in the flesh that pictured in brochures.

The only thing I would warn if choosing this size is to check the stock suspension clearances in the front. I have a 2" lift fitted and although they do not touch/rub in any way through the full articulation of the suspension/steering they do come close in a few areas. Also the spare tyre cover no longer fits and the tyre bracket needs a small spacer to stop the tyre resting on the bottom of the door.

I have a set of 265/65/18's BFG KO2's on order. I will be fitting them to my ZR shorty at the end of the month. Looking forward to getting them as have had BFG's on my other Prado's and have been exceptional.

Hey WW have you got the KO2s on yet? Does the tyre cover fit over the spare? How have they gone? Liking at these the cooper at3 vs mickey ts stz. Man its hard to decide so many conflicting reviews..... Cheers tom.

After approx 10,000 KM on the KO2's on a ZR with about 20% being on western QLD/SA dirt (20 - 25 PSI pressure towing 1600KG camper) I am fairly happy with them, I have them mounted on 20" rims so the side wall on the 20" is about 8mm ish less than the standard 18" tyre so not too dissimilar. The wet sealed road hold is a little less than I expected compared to Cooper LTZ (not a LT tyre and had several punctures in them even when near new) but if you drive it as intended grip is sufficient.

At this stage I will get them again for the 20's or put a set on the standard 18's if I refit the 18's to the car.

Sorry I can't help with the fitting of the 265 65 18 KO2 in the spare tyre shell but at 802 mm it might be pushing it.

I ended up going with Mickey Thompsons STZ 265/60r18 the best price was a few hundred cheaper than the KO2's and they get some good reviews. Took them for a 1000k round camping trip and so far pretty good. A little more noisier than the AT20's on the hwy, but were awesome on the dirt roads i only managed to get the traction control beeping a bit once trying to push it round corners.
