  • I installed a HPD oil catch can. Its got steel mesh washable filters on the inlet and outlet port. It also has a dipstick and build quality is very good.

Kit came with mounting brackets & took about 30 mins to install

    • Wow! That looks pretty good. The real test is when you check the outlet hose after 2000km for any oil residue - doesn't matter if there is oil caught in the bottom of the catch can, if oil mist still gets out, it just delays the inevitable intake clean.

      • True, Ill keep you guys informed.

I have a Provent catch can as well which i think will be more effective. I like how the provent comes with a clear tube at the bottom to expell all the oil. once the oil is in the tube, it cant really make its way up to the outlet.

        • I have a quick question for all you mech-heads

Where does the blow-by gases generate from?
1 - the Crank case (bottom)
2 - the valve cover (top)

I'm trying to work out the direction the air flows.

          • Crankcase which vents to the valve cover. Gases bypass the piston rings increasing pressure in the sump. The sump pressure vents through the oil galleries etc to the valve cover.

            • And that is what my initial thoughts were too mjrandom.

Have a look at all the pic's here on the provent 200 install. All of them have the top tube (closet to the removal cap) going to the valve cover and the bottom tube (closet to the oil drain plug) going to the crank case. Seems logical...

If you look at the top tube on the real provent can you will see an arrow point towards the body of the can and the bottom tube pointing away from the can. This indicates the air flow direction.

Now if mjrandom is correct which I also believe, then all the installs here are incorrect.

                    • Oh, the super faint arrow pointing to the right. Can see it now. I was expecting a big red obvious arrow.

                      • no.. no obvious Red arrow and that why users have it installed wrong.

The good thing is it doesn't do any damage to the can or the motor, but it will not do its job 100%

To fix you will need to remove can, clean and put a new filter and reverse the hoses.

                        • The catch can is taking fumes/gases etc from the rocker cover and sending the filtered fumes to the inlet of the intercooler. The installs are correct, nothing goes into the crankcase.

                          • Maybe I have jumped the gun here

The pipe that is removed between the valve cover to the ?????? I though looked to be the crank case.

Please correct me as I have no diagram to view and its a little tight to see what going on down in that area of the motor.

                            • Hopefully posting this is ok and not a breach of copyright.

Inlet is the top port, this takes the hose from the crankcase via the rocker cover. The lower port then runs to the intercooler inlet. If you look at the various pics in this thread you can see the upper port connected straight to the rocker cover while the lower port gets connected to the steel pipe leading to the air system. Don't get confused and think that the steel pipe goes to the crankcase.

There are better pics but here is mine:

Rocker cover straight to the top port of the Provent 200. Lower port then runs to the steel pipe.

                              • Thank you.

My confusion was where the steel pipe was going AND not knowing that the valve cover was venting for the crank case. What a brain f@&t I just had.

The reason I came back to this is that I'm also finding oil residue when I open the provent cover. Now that I understand whats going on this makes a lot on sense. I need to check the other pipe and make sure its clean to know its doing its job.
