  • Thanks Leigh

It would be nice to see an image of the hose connecting into the engine to get more clarity. Most pics out there are of a can being mounted in the engine bay.

Head gasket looks ok from checking the oil cap and oil. - Any other way to check for symptoms? The car was just serviced by Toyota less then 2000km ago.

How short is short? I warm up the car for 5mins or until the water temp hit 45deg, and ATF is at 40deg, then drive softly for the next 5-10min before driving normally. Trips are no less then 20km one way every day in HWY traffic from around 35-50min..

    • If you don't drive at highway speeds for long periods moisture can build up in the sump,
when you do a long trip the water evaporate out and you get moisture in the trap.

Next time you go for a couple of days long drive empty the trap after the first day
then check again after the second day and you'll probably find no moisture.

Apart from that the mositure is a good sign, it shows the provent is condensing
      out the vapor.

      • What you have just said did happen on our last trip. After I empty the trap is was just moisture on the return home. Thanks for clearing that up Leigh.

Interestingly I have yet to see any oil in the trap, but I did notice the Provent filter was oily.

If anyone has any pics of the hose connection to the engine, please post them us.

Thank you for pointing this out.

FYI - westernfilters told me that the bottom connection on the Provent is meant to go to the rocker cover while the top connection goes to the block breather case?

            • Top connection goes to the valve cover breather while the bottom one goes to the tube behind it.
Im still deciding if it is worth installing a catch can. Lots of people dont install them and their engines are just fine.

              • Hey Toyo

I have installed it correctly, but after the guys at westernfilters 9who sell the real provent) told me something different I had to question my install. - all good now

I guess it all depends on a few factors. If you are running a chip, high boost, do a lot of low range or offroad with boost on a lot I would highly recommend installing one... they do work.

For me I tow a boat on HWY's which in some areas are hilly with a lot of off/on the right peddle. I can produce a lot of blow-by from this. I plan on keeping this car for more then 10years if all goes well, so the more oil deposit I catch before re-entre the cleaner my engine will be after 10years.

On another note - I have a track car what was running high boost. We found that after installing the can (not a provent) we had a far cleaner intercooler which didn't need cleaning. This also meant our fuel octane was not being dropped by the oily blow-by as the can was catching it.

I washed the car today and had a look at the valve on the provent and found about 5ml of black oil in the tube. I had a big smile on my face when l saw that.

                      • Aside from the lack of filter there is conjecture that the metal cans stay hotter and this doesn't allow the moisture to condense.

                        • Been hunting through this thread for the last couple of weeks, after a mate showed me a picture of the manifold on his D4D Hiace. Jeepers, the thing was the worst I've ever seen. Not cheap getting it cleaned either.
So going to bite the bullet and install a Provent in the next couple of weeks on the 150.

Watched this video just to get my head around how easy people are saying it is:

                          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=720nRkALId8

So it's really just as easy as popping the hoses off from the rocker cover and attaching/clamping the hoses from the catch can?
Forgive the rookie question, just wanting to make sure I'm not missing anything obvious and vital here.

                          Thanks boys.

                          • Yeah, it is that easy.

The western filters kit isn't bad to start with, but there are a few issues with it. There are no washers (spring or flat) in the kit, 4wd vibrations would cause it to fall apart. The hose for the drain isn't oil safe, so after a while will go hard, crack and leak. The other thing is you can remove the steel pipe down to the turbo all together. Down at the turbo is a rubber reducer, remove that and the fitting on the turbo is the same size as the outlet on the provent. 25mm oil safe breather hose used and away it goes, no reducers and a lot neater. The bracket is also flashy unfinished stainless steel, needs a coat of black paint to fit in.

                            • Thanks for the heads up AussieAndy.
Always good to hear a bit of feedback on ways these kits might be improved.
Washers can obviously just be added before screwing on the bracket and the unit right? Should I be looking for any particular setup/combo from your experience?
Will definitely get an oil safe hose for the drain hose, funny their supplied one isn't?
Will definitely look at removing that steel pipe down to the turbo. Would definitely come up a lot neater for sure. And bracket painting is a must! All black errything.
                              Thanks again.

I hadnt thought of this before I went to make up the bracket to get it low as possible but now I worried that on short trips around town etc that the rubbish would not have time to get up the hill and run back to the head etc Can anyone tell me why I shouldnt worry about it. None of the traps seem to be low enough to get the oil and condensation running downhill. Thanks
Has anybody experienced any problems with hoses running up hill into the catch can from the rocker cover?
