  • Oil Catch Can for catching Blow-by....

Been looking around and asking questions and it seems that a lot of people recommend installing Oil Catch Can to catch the blow-by and help prevent the Intercooler from clogging up.......

After talking to my cousin who works in the Filter Business, it looks as though he sells them mainly to Nissan & Mitsubishi owners to help prevent their intercoolers from clogging up with oil & to stop the hoses from blowing apart & splitting due to oil impregnation from the oil blow bye.....or he said to anyone who has a fumey engine.....

Does anyone have one of them fitted to their Prado?

I would highly recommend installing a catch can asap. I have spent the last day and a half dismantling and cleaning the inlet elbow and intake manifold. Not a good job for the faint hearted. What I found was that the inlet elbow and intake manifold were absolutely coated with a thick black gooey gunk that is near impossible to remove without the assistance of some sort of solvent bath. Getting the inlet manifold off is quiet a hard job and it's not one that I'll be doing again. Until I can mount and install a catch can now that the manifold and elbow are clean I'll be using a can of CRC Heavy Duty Parts & Throttle Body Cleaner every 5,000 klms straight into the intake system. What is annoying is that I cleaned out the elbow at 90,000 klms and now at 115,000 klms I have to do it again!

I've been thinking along the same lines as the Prado now has 22000km on it and I'd like to install the catch can ASAP to prevent this sort of thing occurring. After scanning the interweb for what was available I stumbled across this

            http://www.carformance.com.au/ultima...catch-can.html and

            http://www.carformance.com.au/produc...ovent-200.html

And figured that it might be worth a shot. Anyone else have any suggestions

            Cheers,

            Chris.

I fitted one a couple of weeks ago. I haven't opened it to see if it has picked up any oil yet, but was thinking of having a look after the next trip up into the high country. There is a photo in my Rig Build http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?21189

I did not want to wait for one to come in the mail from ebay so I picked one up from the local Autobarn store

That's a nice looking rig mate, now I have more things to add to my list...... With the sway bar extensions what size did you end up putting in?? The 2" or 3"?.

It's a 2" lift, but the springs are for when the Prado is loaded with 300kg in the back. So I am still at least 40mm higher even with the van on the back or fully loaded for a week in the bush. Set up to be its best when out in the bush and not for around town.

Getting back on subject, I had never seen or heard of a catch can until I saw them on PP. After some research I would highly recommend one if you are planning on keeping the car for a long time. Here is a couple of other photos (note that I had to move my accessories fuse box to locate it in this location.

Can anyone explain to me how they actually work? Isn't the inter cooler oil under pressure?
Sorry if this is a dumb question i am not very mechanically minded.
                              Cheers, Josh
