I have seen that there are now narrow band units offering 77 to 80 channels (seems to vary depending on manufacturer, I believe 3 of the channels are for restricted use hence the 77 channel variant). I confess I don't really understand the changes other than the allocation of extra frequencies. Is there any real benefit to be gained in going over to the new narrow band enabled units?

Narrow Band UHF radios - worth the change?

I just upgraded my Uniden dual band CB to the new 80 channel model with mini remote head unit and control/display mike. Around here the extra channels means other people will have a chance to talk without waiting for the mining operations to take a breather.Dave

The new channels are very quiet especially in the metro area. All the idiots seem to have stayed on the old channel range so if you are wanting to have a radio that you can use without all the banter and always needing to change channels till you find a free one, upgrading to a unit that does 80 channels is a good move. If you already have radio that can't be upgraded (check the manufacturers web site) then you should be ok with it on the original channels until around 2018.2011 150 GXL D4D Auto White, ARB Deluxe Bar, Windcheatah roof rack, Warn 9000 winch, IPF Spotties, Mounted ARB Compressor, GME TX3540, Codan 9323 with 9350 Auto Tune Antenna, Kaymar rear spacer & HF mount, OME Sport Shocks & Springs, Safari Snorkel, 5T Rated recovery points, Exhaust Jack, BFG AT tyres, Maxtrax, Scangauge.

Can anybody confirm/deny the story Ive been told about the new 80 channel radios broadcast being very quiet when received by the older 40 channel?
The old man has a new (cheap) 80 and I can hardly hear his voice on my GME 40 It seems to be volume only as the clarity is o.k. He's been told something about the compression of the broadcast frequencies being slightly different hence the low volume??Cheers

Channel 7 in Brisbane is an absolute shocker. Absolute mob of bloody anti-social juveniles.

The tolerances in your set are pretty 'rough' (comparatively) , the tolerances in the new NB units are much tighter (closer to what commercial radios, like ICOMs have always had).
