I believe it can be distinguished via the serial number on the shaft. You might need to ask your local toyota dealer to check it. There's more about it in this thread somewhere....

      • What will happen without replacement?

Well its happened. 285k on the 120 and the dreaded clunk has appeared! Only 6 weeks before the Simpson trip and I am wondering after reading through everyone's comments - What would happen if I just keep the grease up and don't replace?.

I reckon I can keep up with the annoyance at traffic lights etc but can anyone tell me what the worst result would be if I did not repair say within the next 50k or so! Anyone had any experience with drastic failures? Thanks

        • Mate every Prado I've had (3of) have had the clunk. Current ones been clunking for the last 80 thou, grease her up mate and enjoy the trip. There been clunking since the 80 series back in 88, obviously still can't get it right. Pump her up (don't over do it) and go for it. Going on a trip like that is throw the grease gun in anyway. Enjoy the trip

          • My Prado has had one shaft replaced at 40000 and started again shortly after. Now 250000, still clunking so not posing a reliability issue.
As Steve said, keep greasing it and it should be ok. Brothers 2016 200 series clunks, from new.

The reason the shafts clunk is down to the finish of the machining of the splines. For whatever reason the machining of the splines is not as smooth as what i would like ( ex fitter and turner) and this IMO is the reason. I think the engineers thought the grease would stay in the rough surface treatment and form pockets of grease, but in reality all it does is wipe the grease out and the bumps get dry and stick. A smooth finish would keep the grease along the entire length of the spline and reduce the friction. Just have a look at a replacement spline from a tail shaft supplier. Smooth finish on the spline.

As for reliability i thought the pressure against the bearings in the transfer case and diff would cause them to fail but this is not the case as mine, as well as many others have done high km without issues.

Oh and we keep the grease gun in the trailer and give it a squeeze during the trip.

            • just had my Prado serviced at Grand Toyota Wangara, they didnt grease the shaft or uni joints,, I asked why and was told by the manager they were greased at the factory and didnt need doing again.. ??? I said why do they have grease nipples then and I want them greasing. The car went back in the workshop for greasing. Maybe this is why the tail shaft clunk is happening.

Yep, that attitude sure wouldn't be helping the situation......

                  • Mine gets done every 5,000 without my asking. It seems to have stopped the issue. I've only noticed the clunk about 5 times in the 160,000 Ive done.

                    • Thanks for the practical advice guys. Looking forward to doing the grease during the Simpson Hay River trip! If you cant take a shower for a few days may as well get dirty! Me and the grease gun are becoming good friends. I reckon that with my current lift and replacing the Coopers 265/65 to BF 265/75's will allow me to get the belly under without digging too much! Will have to check out how accessible those nipples are with ironman bash plates fitted before I purchase a set!

                      • They also didnt clean the battery terminals, service manager told me they don't do that either, they would have to reset the computer/windows/ ect .I asked dont they have a memory minder and was told, "We don't use them, they destroy the computer" . My car will NOT be going back to them

                        • Reset the computer etc to clean terminals????????
Whats wrong with a bit of boiling water to clean the corrosion off the terminals, then blow the water off and spray with electrical protector.

Sounds like someone needs to redo their apprentice, or stop being so lazy.

                          • Your doing the right thing by not taking it back there. I'd be checking every thing that is stated in the log book for that klm service, make sure they have completed it, dodgy bastards

Not so easy with wheels on the ground. You would have to roll the vehicle back and forth to get the nipples in the right position.

                              • I have a 2012 diesel Altitude and have experience the clunk for as long as I can remember. I have commented on it when its been in for a service at Toyota (on the south coast NSW) on each occasion and have been told that my vehicle was delivered with the updated part and therefore the problem should not exist. They have blamed it on the fact that it has been raised (with ARB's OME) and therefore the angles have changed, wiping their hands of any responsibility.
I assume that other people who have experienced the problem and had it rectified, have also had theirs raised and that its BS that it has anything to do with it??
I also assume that its BS that mine was delivered with an updated part?
                                Any info/help would be appreciated.
