  • Tailshaft Clunk

Dear Moderator...please don't lock this one as I did look through the 400 odd posts in the 120 section but could not find what this special grease actually was . It's only mentioned as being high in copper content . So does anyone know of a part number other than the run of the mill Castrol EP2 which is not high in copper ?
    Cheers Ross

The Toyota dealerships I've spoke to all use caltex EP2.

Why don't you ask your dealership what they use if you're so worried about it.

My dealership got a truckload of new tail shafts in a fortnight ago to fix the problem anyway, so you might not even have to worry about the grease.

But onc again... Ask your dealership.... I can guarantee you they'll know what grease they use.

Having my 40k service tomorrow (dropped off tonight) and mentioned the clunk while its under warranty. He said, yep, common problem we will grease it up and all will be good. Do they actually replace the shafts now?

Yeah got a stackload of them out at my dealership for all the 150's

They wanted me to come in last week to have it replaced but I told them they can wait until 20k as its only a couple weeks away.

Btw. How has your prado only done 40k in 3 years? I didn't know that was even possible.

Edit, just remembered yours is an 09. So I suppose it's a bit more reasonable.

Got it a year ago with 22k on the clock, wasn't even broken in an the owner lived in Naracorte. Go figure. Oh and I work 2km from home.

BTW no new tailshaft for me with the last of the 120's (that sounds cool like Mad Max with last of the "whatever" ) It was just a XB Falcoon with a fake blower)

Wooley, so are you going to replace it even though it's not doing it ATM?

I was offered a replacement but to be frank, mine has been quite now for over 10,000km so I didn't bother.

Mine shudders and clunks like a b1tch and I am over it! Glad I read this post so I can ask for a new shaft. Are they actually a different design to combat the issue or do they just put the same one as original in? Another item on the list of stuff for Mr. Toyota to fix.

I never had anywhere near the issues with my 2008 120 as I am having with this 150... Not a fan so far.

Mine still does it. But I haven't done many k's over the last weeks so haven't really thought about it.

I'm led to believe it's a different design in terms of splines and uni's... But who knows.

                    That's the one.

It of interest, do you find it worse when you come to a long rolling stop? Or when you stop abruptly?

Long rolling stop normally. Like when you see a red light in the distance and brake "nicely" to a stop. Not something a $70k+ car should be doing...

I am nearly at the point of cancelling my lease early (only got the car in March this year) and getting something else.

Stoping abruptly for sure, mine has started again so........next visit to Toyota will include:

                        New mudflaps
                        New intank fuel pump
                        New drive shaft

Oh and I might gat a tow bar as well...why not just add to the list

My dealer told me that they pull every shaft out to grease them . It's certainly done the trick for me .
                          Cheers

Ross this worked for me but after 10000km it starts to return and getting the correct amount of grease on it is tricky, to often there is to much and it sprays under the car and up the back a little. The dealer has now agreed to order the revised shaft which has a special coating on the splines. Still needs grease of course but hopefully the shaft does not need removal for it to be applied.

Its been a problem since the 90 series, I had an auto V6 90 series as mentioned the trick is to keep the grease up on the tailshaft.
