  • Suspension upgrade after ARB bar install?

Hi. Really new to 4wding. Will have an ARB deluxe winch bar fitted end October (no winch is being fitted but I though I'd pay extra just to have the space if I change my mind). Is it necessary to have my suspension upgraded? I do almost 100% bitumen but hoping to take the car onto the beach for a little fishing now and then when time frees up a bit. Car's a daily driver and have done about 26K. Future mods planned are a dual battery set up and a fridge at the back. The most I'd do is pull a trailer with bits of camping gear thrown in for the weekend. I don't intend to do outback trips as yet as Ive got two littlies. Just worried that the front end might sag once ive got the bar on. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

nah mate you should be right without the upgraded suspension.
I did it on mine to gain the extra clearance while 4wding and to not have my fillings shaken loose by corrugations and rough tracks.
A steel bar is not enough to make your suspension sag big time.
If you're looking at doing some 4wding and want that bit of extra comfort (and most importantly can justify $1,500 on that) then do it. But if you're mostly on bitumen with a lightly loaded car I'd save my heard earnt!

My 90 series drooped maybe 10mm after fitting a steel bar with stock suppression so the height wasn't a big deal, but it would dive, quite savagely when braking and the head light alignment was thrown out too. Obviously the 150 series is different kettle of fish, but the only 150 owner I know to have done the same thing was not at all happy with the result until the front springs were uprated.

Thanks guys, just worried about the sag and dive on braking. I mostly do road trips with the family ever now and then. Looking forward to doing some low grade tracks to get my confidence up a bit.

So did he get just the front springs uprated or do the whole package? Mine is still a work vehicle so I'm concerned on how the upgrade affects ride comfort. Always appreciative of the responses!

His was an odd case. He only did the front springs (not sure if he changed the struts). I think he used medium rate OME springs for a 120, and the 150, being heavier was pretty much level and was much firmer in the front, so it restored the handling to what it was before the bar was added.

thanks will, at least there are a few options out there. it would be cool to get a full suspension upgrade but the bank account says otherwise. i am also afraid that if i do the full 40mm lift, id be dissatisfied with the grandtreks ive got now and be pressured to complete the look by getting AT's fitted as well. i just dont get enough time to enjoy the car as much as i should due to family and work commitments to get the most of the mods. oh, not to mention the money to do it at one hit. hahaha. thanks a bunch mate,

            cheers, gerard
