  • 1999 D4D V8 Conversion

    G'day everyone,

Was wondering whether anyone has attempted or thought about putting the 70 series D4D V8 into a 90 series prado. I'm looking to change out the 3.4 Petrol I currently have to a diesel. Would also be interested if you have put the newer 3.0L D4D from the 120 series into a 90.

Any info would be great such as cost and how much of a hassle it was.

    Cheers, Remo.

I think you will have trouble fitting the 1VD-FTV in a 90 series engine bay

    http://www.australianimages.com.au/conversion/

This guy could only make it fit a 100 series engine bay with some serious mods. Have you considered a Petrol V8? Perhaps a screaming 6.0L LS2 or a Toyota 4.7L V8 (2UZ-FE), these may have space issues too though. Even the 120 series 1GR-FE would be a serious power upgrade for a 90 series. If you got an early model 120 v6 (pre 2004 I think) you could take the bell housing and it should bolt straight up to your 90 series transmission.

The 4.7L (2UZ-FE) was a motor they used in the 90 series in other markets under the Lexus brand name.
97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.

Regarding the D4D into a 90 series the search button is your friend

        http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...s&daysprune=-1

There is another thread I looked for where a member here has put a D4D into his 90 series. I can't remember their username so someone else might.

His Prado was a 1KZ-TE to begin with so the fuel system was already setup for diesel and the 1KD-FTV has the same engine mounts and intercooler location.

Mdremo's plan is much bigger under taking.

I usually just say whack the TRD supercharger on the 3.4L, but I like the sound of that 4.7L option as well!

Thats what I want to do, if and when the current motor dies, the auto box is suppost to be the same, just different bell housing, and the engine mounts are easy to make, it is just the wiring loom and the ECU and immobiliser that will be the problem.

Croozza: Which model Lexus had a 2UZ? As I understand it, the 120 was the first Prado to be re-branded as a Lexus (GX470).

I can't recall what the model code was, but I saw it in the US, it was a late model 90 series (about 99-00 vintage), looked awesome and sounded better. Whether or not they made it to look like a Lexus, I don't know, but it definately was a 90 series with Lexus badging and a 4.7 in it. I think I even seen one in NZ (obviously privately imported), but I only caught a glimps of it so I can not be sure.

I'm thinking of putting a couple of Lexus badges on my Prado and calling it a GX340

You can do that, but there still is no V8 under the bonnet.

Yeah the 120 v6 gets my vote.

I'll have to rename my car again, this time to GX400

The Toyota 4runner in the us had an option for the 4.7 v8. Same prado chassis too I think..

The 3rd gen 4runner only had a 2.7L and 3.4L petrol options. When the 120 series prado was released that was when the introduced the lexus with the 4.7 v8
                              I had mental issues when I owned a Discovery.......But it's sorted now!
