The day started with at the meeting point of the northbound of the twin BP Service Stations at Morayfield. Those driving petrol vehicles took the opportunity to fuel up and the diesel drivers got a jump on the breakfast and coffee.
Hutch brought out the navigational aids to be utilised for this Recee, the first was something that some of us had never seen before and was a large piece of paper with lines, names and numbers on it that covered the bonnet of the 150 Prado, it appeared to be all the screenshots that you see on the GPS printed out in order. Hutch had drawn a line on this map to show the intended journey to be taken. Richo seemed more interested in the numerous side tracks that deviated from Hutch's intended track. Talk then moved to what and how many electronic GPS devices each of us would be utilising to record the track. You can never have enough toys.
With everyone fuelled and fed the convoy hit the road and headed north. After arriving in Tewantin and all vehicle ready and permitted Hutch took the lead taking us from Tewantin to the Pomona Connection Road and then onto a 'short cut' track. This track started out like any normal dirt track but after passing some farms, houses and the No Through Road sign it lead to a grassed track that hadn't seen much recent vehicular traffic. From this point the track started to diminish in width. Hutch continued on making his way through some wet grass that soon became mud, a muddy creek that once had a timber bridge and then a sink hole.
Fozzy ponders the requirement for a lift as he looks at the non lifted 150 stuck in the muddy creek. It seems like the combination of standard suspension and nearly worn out Grandtrek AT20's are not helping the situation.
Kondo's supercharged 100 series powered through the first bit of mud under the grass as Brains' 150 still remained in the creek.
Hutch returned with his set of trusty Maxtrax to assist in allowing the 150 to walk out of the creek bed. The left rear wheel had lost contact with the ground and was just sitting above the ground, the right wheels were in some mud. One Maxtrax was placed under the rear left wheel and one under the rear right wheel. As a virgin user of Maxtrax at this particular moment I was amazed at how easily the 150 now walked out the creek.
Kondo and Richo easily tackled the creek with their far superior tyres and lifted rigs. Then Fozzy took the 120 down and pretty much lost traction at the same spot as the 150. Although the 120 had the Cooper ST's the rear left wheel having no contact with the grpound and right wheels spinning in mud left no option but to use the Maxtrax again with the aid of a snappy snatch by Richo. I was to led to believe that this was Fozzy's first time getting snatched.
Then came the sink hole that Hutch found by driving through it. To aid the other vehicle getting through he built a bridge from scratch and is an engineering mastermind.
Yes the Maxtrax came to the rescue again by Hutch placing the two Maxtrax in the hole to make a bridge.
