  • Cape York et al. - August

Well folks, extremely excited and 3 more sleeps to go before we depart Alice for the beauty of the far north of QLD. I just want to hook up the camper and go!

Take off Sunday for an RV at Barkly Homestead to meet our Darwinite pals

I am hoping to keep you posted on the adventure so I can share the experience, particularly for those that will follow shortly after.

Car and camper are ready, had a great time doing stuff (dual batteries, diff breathers, new wheels & tyres) and have been loving ARB! (Sahara Bar, XDC winch, safari snorkel, compressor, tyre kit, recovery gear) I am looking forward to putting the Prado through its paces on the Bloomfield, Frenchmans, OTT & road to Vrylia.

Well I hope I remain diligent with updates..communicate soon fellow PP's.

    I love this country!

    Keeper

We left Melbourne on Friday Morning and arrived in Cairns on Sunday night. Just starting the preparations to leave Cairns on Wednesday morning for Cape trib then off to Elim and into Lakefield Nat Park then off to the teli graph track. I hope we catch some of you up here over the next 4 weeks.

          Cheers,

hey guys if you can read this while away .DO NOT attempt NOLANS BROOK with a camper trailer. nolans apparently claims 30 -40 vehicles a year and it came sphincter puckeringly close to claiming mine without a trailer . its running at about 1.2mtrs deep and the bottom is EXTREMELY SOFT . i had to use ALL 180 killowatts to tractor my way out . i will post pictures of the top rail of my bullbar 2 inches underwater in a trip report . if i had my time again i would not have attempted it ie. water in car. oh yeah , my car went a whole lot of places that more serious vehicles had to winch out .

              Hi kav

Did you keep it far right heading North? We found this was much shallower in 08. The steeper entry track on that side paid dividends when you got to the water. The obvious route through the middle tended to float the cars.

              Cheers

Last year 2 x defenders and a 200 series got flooded at Nolans Brook in the hrs before we arrived. Our group of three vehicles (us towing a camper) crossed with no issues at all using the line described by Corigator. Took the same line in the Sothern direction on the return trip and again had no problems.
Nolans Brook as a very sandy bottom that is constantly changing with the river currents so it is an absolute must to walk crossing and check out all the possible lines.

yeah i took that line going south . the big problem is the bottom is the same as the stuff in the bottom of your fish tank and your pushing 1.2mtrs of water . the tyres start looking for something solid and you start going down even further. it was a crystal clear brook when i went in and a black swamp when i got out . the dashboard was lit up like a christmas tree , the doors had enough water in them that i could hear it sloshing around and my toes got wet .

I did it 2 days ago and yes stick to the far right going north. I was a foot off line and had to get pulled out, had it all set up before I went in and still got 3 inches of water in the car. All good though at loyalty beach now and having a fat time
