  • Replacement Keys

    Hi,

Both the batteries in the original keys for our '04 Prado have died. I hear you say, "just replace them". Problem is the screws in both the keys to pull them apart have rusted and are stripped out.

Has anyone bought the non-genuine key cases off Ebay too replace their original keys? My thinking is, buy the Ebay keys, get two new keys cut then drill out the hole on the original key and swap over the internal electrical bits.

I bought 2 keys off ebay a few months back, they cost me about $13 including a battery. I got the blank keys cut by the key cutter in my local shopping centre, I think that cost me about $8 for one, used the internals out of the original key and it works a treat. Certainly a lot cheaper than the genuine Toyota option.

I bought the flip key shell, very similar to this but not the same seller
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TOYOTA-2-...item2c5b3c2d02

Works a treat except that the flip mechanism has worn down a bit and it would flip out in my pocket. So swapped to the 2nd shell (I bought 2 at the time) and all is good again. It has been good for the last 18 months. The flip mechanism is made of plastic so it wears out eventually. Just don't fidget with it and won't wear out so quick.

As for the original key, it cracked as a reqult of a weak design. That's why I went for the flip shell.

Edit: This is the seller I bought from http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Toyota-2-...item564381c448

Bought 2 off this guy for my Rav4 - which is the same as the Prado (breaks just the same way just above the blade too) free shipping, cost me more to get them cut at the local shopping center key cutter than the blanks themselves. Even though they had the Denso sticker and the Toyota logo, not totally convinced they were genuine, on one I had to drill out the LED hole slightly to make it close. Otherwise it was just swap the inside out. Took the chance to change the batteries while I was at it, picked the batteries up from Dick Smith for a couple of $.

I recently bought 2x CR1616 batteries for the Prado remote from this seller
          http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....m=140581142483
Pretty cheap, free & fast postage and all is good so far.

I have done the same with no issues.

I bought a key from ebay for less than $10 without the Toyo logo, took it to the local locksmith ( not mr Minit) with the car's handbook which has the key code in it and he cut the key in a moment. It was recommended that you don't take an old worn key to a mr minit because eventually you will wear the lock. Drill out or force the old key open and put the little motherboard set-up with a new battery in it in your new key and you are in business. The quality of the plastic on the new key seems stronger than the Toyo one.

I ended up getting two new keys and two new batteries from Ebay (about $18 delivered). Went to a few local Mr Minit type stalls, two refused to cut it as I had bought my own key and one wanted $30 per key to cut.

Finally found one who ended up die grinding the old screw so a flat blade screw driver would fit into it. He undid the old screw, replaced it with a new one and for the cost of a new battery my original key is working again. Will keep the Ebay purchases as spares.

Yep, no problems, but beware of how much they will charge you to cut the key! I went to the dude at the shopping centre, he said no problem, took the key and walked over to his machine. Not sure why, but I asked him how much? $50. I laughed and told him not to bother. He then told me that he was responsible for the cutting, and if he stuffed it up the blanks cost him $50. I took it off him, told him it was $6 off ebay and left. Thief.
Went to a locksmith, charged me $10.
