I have been hearing this god almightly rattle come from my standard exhaust and when I take it to Allan at Blitz custom exhaust (Hoppers Crossing, VIC) it goes away. when it does it, if i get a block of wood and push on the rattle from the cat goes away. Mind you its only done 66000 ks and failed already. For the record its never been hit or bashed, the mrs thrashes it i recon!!! So next week ive got it booked in for new high flow cat 100-200 cpi not sure which until the day and a straight through muffler. He did the high flow muffler on my 07 D4d hilux for $150 and made a big difference. turbo spooled up ealier and more torque. So ill keep you posted on the out come and total cost for cat, muffler and labour for guys interested in melbourne.

I have not done anything about the exhaust yet as I found the noisy rattle I was getting was due to the bolts with the springs on the flange joint not doing up enough as there was not enough threaded section. Swap the bolts over and all good. This has not made me so pressed to go in and get it changed over too.

I have just ordered today a Chip It chip, egt controller, throttle controller, & oil catch can so I will be doing something very soon as ill be itching for the exhaust mod. To be honest ive been thinking to go full exhaust due to the fact that regardless I will need the dump pipe modified for the EGT controller sensor.

The Prado's biggest power robbing factor is the muffler, cat, and dump pipe. The pipe size is not the issue.
Change to high flow muffler and 100cpi cat for best bang for buck is my answer.

I now have to way up if the muffler cat & dump pipe made bigger with 1/8 gas bung & labour is worth doing comparied to a full system. ill be seeing Allan next week and keep you updated on his cost and thougths

just got a lukey muffler cut and welded onto my prado.
car definately drives different, it's a lot smoother and better response at low revs.
no drone at all, but you can hear it's there and a bit of turbo whistle.
fuel economy on dash has dropped by 1-1.2 L/100 straight away.
any WA pper's PM for details.
          cheers

I'm getting a straight through muffler fitted to the Prado next week. I've been quoted ~$250 which is ok for a standard muffler or ~$500 for a stainless steel version. Most of your quotes are cheaper than that. Am I getting ripped off for it? Or are the stainless ones that much more expensive?
            Cheers.

No need for stainless. $250 is not cheap, but if that's the best price you can get, still a good move.

Will the standard one rust out quicker? We spend a bit of time on the beach...

Hello guys, I have read through this thread and have some questions150 related)

1: How many mufflers do the GXL's have? I have a GX and I only see a cat and the large muffler forward of the diff.
2: When you are talking about putting in a straight through muffler are you changing the large one just before the diff?

The factory GX system looks pretty good, the dump is smooth and the whole system is a good size, the large muffler there is huge though!

Mine is manual and I would not like to lose any boost between gear changes. I won't be chipping it, just a few easy killerwasps would be good and there seems to be an improvement in fuel economy by changing the muffler which is more appealing than power.

3'' would be too large IMO and just louder...

                      Cheers Brad

Mine is a GX too. They replaced the large muffler you refer to with a 22" manga flow free flow stainless muffler. My "seat of the pants" tells me there may be a slight improvement in power, but I haven't yet travelled far enough to assess the fuel economy benefits. I'll post back after 3 tanks.

                          Hey Jayden,

Did you just do the muffler in the end, or did you opt for hi-flow cat?

Who did you goto and what did it cost?

                          Cheers,

                            Hey cbm8880,

                            Any news on fuel economy?

I rang a couple of places today (close to home), they were all too busy trying to flog me a full system whenever I asked about muffler + cat replacement......

At $1300 fitted, I think I'll run with the high flow muffler first. From there I might consider cat. The money saved would be better on a snorkel (IMO)

Anyone end up changing their cat a few weeks / month after the muffler? If so, was it actually worth the cost or not?

                            Cheers,
                            Kevin

Sadly, I've not noticed any improvement in fuel economy. There is a slight improvement in power I think though. Overall, it probably wasn't towrth the investment to do this alone.

                              Sounds good though!

My car is approaching the 100,000klm mark, would something to consider be the lifespan of the catalytic converter? I still want to change out the big muffler one day but I reckon the difference wouldn't be as noticeable if the cat was reaching the end of it's life. I'm uneducated on diesel catalytic converters, but if they are similar or the same as those found on a petrol engine, 100,000klm can see them starting to block up.

In the end it might be just as cheap or easy to replace the whole system..... Which I don't want to do. (I'm a sucker for the cheap mods!)

                                Any thoughts on this?

                                Cheers Brad.
