If you disable the chip is there still a performance or fuel economy improvement over standard?

I don't believe the would be. I know with the dpchip there's an adaptor to reloop the ends on the wiring harness. This is when you want to remove the chip but not the harness (ie when you take it in to toyota for a service). This effectively removes the chip from the circuit so I don't see how there can be power or economy improvements over standard as it is basically brought back to stock.

Thanks William. In reading this thread I was under the impression that the factory exhaust was restrictive. I'll save the $200 and not bother with changing my muffler.

The factory exhausts is very restrictive. That's why I changed mine.

Sorry I thought you were talking about a standalone chip.

The answer to your question would then be Yes, an aftermarket exhaust alone (without a chip) will make a difference.

Just came back from a week away, towed a 2 tonne plus full size van 900k to shark bay and back, swapped the standard muffler for a straight through muffler the day before we left and without doubt is the best mod I've ever done, cost me $180 and about an hour, gets rid of the bottom end turbo lag and free'd up the engine more than I could believe, and saved about 5kg as well. A must do mod.

I went to Port Kennedy exhaust and he fitted a Lukey muffler.

                      kev and matt

was the exhaust a cut and chop or was it a bolt on item , as spoke to a local 4x4 shop and they suggested the front muffler was a cut and chop -- and then tried to push a 3inch system?

i havent had the chance to get under the car yet

Cut and welded. Three inch is just gonna burn up all your low down torque..

Go for the muffler first and see what you think.

Matt's right, had a 3 inch system on my previous 4wd (D4D hilux) had to drive it up in the rev range to get any performance gain no better down low even alittle weaker. I'm doing muffler only on the prado as it's heaps stronger than the hilux ever was performance wise.
                          Cheers.

They just cut the existing muffler out and then welded in the new muffler with a short section of pipe to make up the length as my muffler was about 20 cm shorter than the existing muffler.

Can peoples who have fitted the straight through glass packed mufflers confirm that it doesn't make the car any louder. Was about to get it fitted last week and the exhaust place said it would be allot louder.

Mine isn't any louder at all from inside the vehicle. It wasn't until the other day when the misses drive off and I watched her drive off that I noticed a little bit of a note.
