  • would like to see a dyno before and after with just muffler replaced and then one with a bigger exhaust compared to standard.

For those with a 2010 model, my 2012 went better better than my 2010 model. If you haven`t had the auto upgrades and ecu upgrade done, might be worth checking in to make sure you are running the latest auto and engine programs.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

    • sorry if this is a dumb question but from reading this thread the redback muffler only seems to be a good way to go? is this correct?

If so can i get the muffler and fit it directly to the existing system? If so whats the part no.

Also does this increase the turbo whistle? anything moving toward a mack truck 'spooling up' sound would be nice....

In a turbo, lowering back pressure ie behind the turbo exhaust - will allow the turbo to spin faster, hence increasing torque, since the turbo will operate at higher RPMs hence pushing in more air into the motor.

However ... how does the diesel know how much fuel to push into the motor? EFI system often read the air flow going into the motor ... does the D4D sence the air flow into the motor? I presume it must, hence why a D4D operates well in high altitudes.
The engine management knows the correct boost and monitors it, putting a bigger exhaust won't do jack as the computer will adjust the boost to suit. If it can't control the boost it will throw an engine light.

Big exhaust will help the engine breath easier and may improve response and pickup but peak power and torque won't change while the computer is in full control.

Once you remap the computer, best done with a programmable chip or if possible complete refresh of the entire onboard computer with new boost and fuel settings to take advantage of the easier breathing. Obviously done on a dyno.

An exhaust on its own will improve the turbo response, but not its peak output with comprehensive engine management.

        • Slighlty off topic, but to answer re how diesels know how much fuel, Isn't there a MAF sensor and a MAP sensor?
MAF is the 'Mass air flow' which is located just after ther airbox and is simply a temperature dependant resistor to calculate volume and density.
'Manifold absolute pressure', or MAP, is found just before the manifold splits to each individual cylinder. It takes another reading of the density of the charged air after the turbo and intercooler because it is cooler, hence denser, and thus controls fuel input and EGR system (which is mixed into charged air). This is partly why physically blocking EGR can throw codes.

Correct me if i'm wrong there.

          • I'm not exactly experienced with this kinda thing, but am looking to get a bit more punch out of her, and bang for buck a high flow muffler and cat seems the best option.

Is fitting a high flo muffler and cat something that's easy to do at home? Are they just bolt in, or do they need to be cut and welded?

If there are bolt in options, is anyone who has done these mods able to provide part numbers? Been looking around on the net, but not finding much.

            • You would be lucky to find anything bolt in, I would say impossible. It's weld in, any good exhaust shop should be able to help you out for not too much coin

Sure have, on my old cruiser I had a full exhaust including extractors done by Scott, mate has full exhaust including extractors done by Scott on his petrol cruiser, dad has a Scott's exhaust on his turbo cruiser. Any exhausts we do through work are done through Scott. His workmanship is very good value for money, he can do anything from standard exhausts right through to show car quality. Waiting for my bank account to catch up with me then the mighty Prado will be going in to get one on too. He is local to me, so even though I am capable of fitting it myself I get them to do the work. One of the few people I trust to work on my car.

                  • Put on a Beaudesert exhaust last week and very happy. At speed no difference in cabin noise, but under acceleration you can get a burble happening. It also sounds throatier when you turn it off. Less restriction I feel. Larger in diameter obviously, by my measurement around 10mm OD, and mandrel bent. I drove over 1000km's at an average of 99 kph (according to trip feature) from Brisbane to near Canberra at Easter and used 10.4 litres per hundred. Would normally see closer to 12's at that speed. Had it on 120 kph on freeways, which is around 110 kph.
Bit more pull at the lights, and around 1500 to 1700 rpm down Pennant Hills Road through Sydney it was at the head of the pack. No difference in shift points etc. Cant wait to see how it tows the camper next week with bigger mud tyres and full loaded. Cheers, mmm beer.

                        • I just changed my muffler and can notice a slight increase in down low throttle response. It also seems smoother.

its still very quiet which i like.

well had a fun couple of days installing this thing. Jeez the OE exhaust is a dog! Anyway after battling with it for several hours finally got it off. The hardest bit was the dump pipe. Just getting to the bolts was a pig. Lots of swearing and scraped skin....Anyway the new system went on in about 10 bloody minutes after all that!

Anyway so the exhaust seems to be pretty good quality. Its the standard stainless steel used on most OE exhausts so not exactly polished etc but it should last the course. All the welds were neat enough and painted in cold galv. The connections are nice with four bolt holes, should be much stronger than the OE. The hangers are the same weld on pins as the OE system. It has two threaded holes for EGR sensors etc. The sound is a little bit more throaty than before but noticeably the turbo starts to spin much easily and the engine feels as if it revs more freely. You dont really notice the sound in the car.

Annoyingly the tail pipe slightly knocks on the towbar when i turn right sharply...ive cut off a small bit of old fuel hose i had laying around and split it over the section of towbar so i dont get the noise but ill probably get a different hanger to drop it by a few mm. This should solve the problem although the hose solution does work...

anyway im pleased with it...my colleague at work bought a pacemaker one and is pissed off he spent way more and got less (not stainless, poor paint job, less EGT holes etc)

                            • I Ordered a Genie Legendex-2 3" exhaust system and Roo Chip 4 weeks ago direct from Genie for my 2011 Kakadu.. and im still waiting for them to ship it -.- every week they have had a different excuse as to why it hasn't been sent.. first it was "we have it all just waiting on more turbo dump pipes to be made" then it was "just making up the over axle pipe" then it was "no roo chips available so we are going to order you a Rapid Off-Road chip" then it was "just confirming its a 1KD Auto" thenn another call was "ohh so sorry we just got the chip in and realized its not plug and play... is that ok by you" latest word.. 4 weeks in on Friday was it was going to be "on the next truck out of Narangba, QLD to be shipped to Darwin".... I still have not seen the $2500 come out of my account yet.......
