  • Exhaust systems for 150's which is best?

Hey I tried searching but couldn't find anything relating to the 150 series.
So I'm after a full system for my rig but before I part with my money I would like to here what you guys recommend? Also do I have to run a cat convertor by law in QLD and what affect will having an after market exhaust have on my warranty?

Firstly Barry yours is diesel isnt it? Im pretty sure it is so you dont have a cat converter as they are only on Petrol engines.

Diesel 150's dont have a particulate filter either i think the egr system is pretty techie so they can get away without one and still meet emission requirementsso there is no issue there either.

Personally i had mine fitted by Exotic exhaust in sumner park full 3' with flex joint and large sports muffler, full stainless with lifetime warranty on the flex joint and the centre muffler. I firstly tried chip only and it went like a rocket then just swapped out the centre muffler and there was a difference then i went full system and to be honest i dont notice much more difference than just the centre muffler replacement.

either way your chip would be far more dodgy when it comes to warranty then any exhaust you could fit

Yeah mate she's a diesel. Well it turns out they do have a catalytic converter after all. So I got some quotes from Tiapan and Beaudesert exhausts and the all say they are no louder then standard. Which kind of disappoints me, I'm after a bit of a note/bark along with a power increase. I'm hoping the Manta system isn't so boring. Which I think are the breed chip-it sell. I can get a mild steel Manta system without a cat for $995. I'm not going to worry about a cat I think it might rob me off a kilowatt.

When speaking with Manat, stress to them that you want to remove the rear muffler from the system. There are two mufflers in the system and the one at the rear keeps the system sounding pretty much standard. You still get that low down bark when you press the accelerator but without it you get that great sounding deep burble and that sweet turbo whine. Had the same thing done to mine and it's bloody great. The 10 year warranty is also a good thing with the stainless steel Manta systems.

So after some thinking I've decided to go with just a straight through muffler. It's at the exhaust shop as I type getting a glass packed Berklee straight through fitted. I will post a video of what it sounds like tonight for your aural pleasure.

**** I will not be posting video. It sounds exactly the same ****

So after the muffler being fitted the car is quieter and more responsive. The missus is impressed. The 1500rpm vibration/resonance is much less noticeable. One thing I have noticed is EGT's have dropped about 40 degrees at 100 kph. Also if i hold the accelerator flat from a stand still to 150 kph the EGT's reach about 550 degrees instead of 600 with the standard muffler. I can't wait to see how it goes with the Chip-It chip on it which is currently getting sent back for the harness and board replacement to hopefully fix the annoying 'Large Fuel Leak Detected" error code which occasionally pops up.

So can I ask what exactly was changed and how much it costs? I have been thinking of just getting the centre muffler changes for a straight through. From reading a number of posts it appears that that will give me the best improvement for the smallest amount of cash.

I paid 280. Other shops quoted less but the guy I spoke to knew what I wanted. So I went with them. Definitely noticeable especially over taking and roll on power. I can't wait to get my chip back I say go for it mate.

Had a Manta exhaust fitted today. Stainless, centre and rear mufflers, but no cat. Afraid of setting light to both my car and the countryside with a superhot cat. Sometimes use tracks with dry speargrass etc.
Seat of pants feeling - noticeable difference. Now, if I sink the boot from standing, the rear squats a bit, the front lifts a bit and she really boogies! Might mention this is coupled with a Steinbauer. Think back to my first FJ40 with 3 burnt out exhaust valves. Ah, they were the days.

                    Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if they are running a modded or aftermarket exhaust on their D4D 150 WITHOUT a chip, I have a few options in front of me, wondering which the best way to go is. A few observations I have made so far.

The 150 series D4d turbo does not have a vacuum actuator operated waste gate on the exhaust side, so I will assume the boost is controlled by the electronic solenoid on the Inlet snail of the turbo, hence no real great gains to be had by putting a 3” dump pipe on turbo as the outlet looks to be only 2.5”, if some one has photo’s of the turbo with the pipe removed, it would be great, I cant find any on exhaust sites, they all seem to run a generic photo of the systems, not a 150 specific photo.

Will I get any issues with the following situations?

Fit a 3” mandrel bent off the shelf job, without cat fitted, with no chip fitted; will there be fault codes etc.

I have a 4” sub metal cat which I plan on using, but will not be putting in until chip goes in and can be tuned, but I want to get exhaust on first.

There are plenty of cat back items for sale, but unless the cat in removed or replaced, they serve no real purpose as the cat is the most restrictive part of the exhaust.

I can make a 3”, turbo back system myself, I have pipe, bends, cat and tig, so mufflers only required, but if a nice unit that works can be bought for under $1000. I won’t waste my time building one, better off going to work for day, earning the $1000 and having warranty on off the shelf item.

I have chipped and put exhaust’s on almost every car I have owned and without a doubt they are the best bang for your buck mods you can do, I just don’t like doing things twice, and I don’t want fault codes or limp modes as SWMBO will kill me for messing up “her” car, besides the safety aspect of a stalling car.

                      G'day smakb,
can I ask you if you have gone any further with just fitting a straight through muffler, I am presently looking at a system from Performance Exhaust in Ringwood for $1150 fitted which is a bit more than around $250 for a muffler and from what I understand not a lot of performance gain.

                      regards

Things are a bit tight and I have had to get a couple of other things (roof rack and fridge) so I have not moved on this one.

Yer im chasing the same thing in a performance gain for our Prado Kakadu but cant work out if just a muffler change is good as full sys output would be. If muffler is cheaper and within ball park figure of HP/KW and NM output why are these name brand systems so expensive?? How can they justify $1000 to $2200 (Stainless) on a system if muffler change is just as good... I had a 09 VE SSV before the kakadu and spent $3800 on just the exhaust and lernt from that mistake, but yes it was top shelf in every way. What sort of brand of muffler and design/constuction material are you guys using?? part # & $$$$ would be great Please and also any recommendations on trial and error attempts

Has anyone swapped the muffler for a straight through pipe yet?

I'm mainly interested on the resulting noise level before I bit the bullet. My thoughts are it will increase, however the turbo and cat should keep the noise to a respectable level.

I've been quoted $80 to replace the muffler with a straight piece of pipe or $250 for a sports mufffler.

                              Thoughts anyone?
