  • Chugging on idle when cold

    Hi all,

I have raised this on the forum previously however it's now got to the stage where Toyota are not sure what is causing it. Just to give a brief history, my D4D when cold will idle roughly when stationary, in Drive, with brakes on. This slowly goes as the engine warms up, usually 30 mins or so. I have had this issue since 13000km service, its now done 82000kms, and I have made mention on almost every service since. They replaced injector at 60000kms and also engine mounts and all seems ok, however just in the last 3 months its started again
Toyota have conducted tests on the injectors and all appears correct. They now want to remove the fuel tanks to see if there are any contaminants in the tank from either a dodgy batch of fuel or possibly metal filings on manufacture. It will cost me $550 to remove the tanks and if its not a manufactures fault then I'm up for who knows.

Has anyone else had this problem? Do I need a second opinion? and who do I get it from ?

    Thanks in advance

Not long since had my 1st Prado 120 and have the same issue. If I get stuck at lights I just grit my teeth and change into N. As you say, a bit annoying but I'm buggered if I'm gonna spend any more on it. Did my first service recently and the dope at the dealership suggested "cleaning the injectors". Still no different. I suppose that makes me the dope.

        Gidday Cloud,

Is the vehicle under warranty or did you make a complaint whilst it was under warranty as I believe there was a fault with this particular batch of mounts. I have had 2 sets already. Apparentley the new ones are ok. Touch wood, all good so far.

        What year is your D4D

          Hi all,

My D4D has just gone over the 91,000klm mark and I have had this same issue for probably the past 20,000klm. It sometime is that bad that I think the engine is going to stall. It doesn't seem to matter whether the engine is hot or cold, but it is intermittent - sometimes there sometimes not. It often is really bad in reverse. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated

Hey ##########, you mention this issue seems to be with newer Toyotas - just wondering whether you knew around what year they started using the more 'modern' fluid filled mounts as opposed to the rubber ones?

              Gidday Bidla,

Mine is same year as yours, since replacing mounts a couple of weeks ago the problem is gone, I would be pushing to have mounts replaced and there was/is an issue with them.

              Good Luck

Anyone got a rough price for changing engine mounts?

Hey all. I had the same problem with my 2008 VX D4D auto, the problem was engine mounts and Toyota replaced them under my extended warrenty. Apparently they are new modified engine mounts. I asked what the cost was to get the job done and was told it cost Toyota New Zealand $700NZ. My toyota dealer said Toyota NZ get a 20% discount on any warrenty work done so assume about $840. I would try and push to get Toyota to pay for it.
I noticed that the vibrations would occur when the car was cold and in particular in reverse and on a down hill right hand angle. GOOD LUCK

Yup roester exactly the same symptoms except mine occurs whether hot or cold. I'll be hunting Toyota to get the mounts done under the extended warranty as well. Thanks for the advice!!

Update: Just talked to Toyota and they say they have not received any Service Bulletins advising of an issue with the mounts. Their take on my rough idle problem is becuse of the intermittency it could not possibly be mounts. If it was mounts then it would be there constantly. They reckon it's more than likely an injector issue, but they'd need for me to leave my vehicle with them overnight so they could evaluate it first thing in the morning when it is cold. Pardon the pun, but stay tuned.....
