  • CHF80 - "Bodacious"

    Hi All

Have had a few 4wds in my time, Pajero, 2 X Challengers, Range Rover and moved over to my 2004 Prado, petrol, auto, 120 series in 2009.

I bought her second hand and she only had around 64,000 k's on the dial. She was an ex doctors car, never been offroad and they had seat covers installed the day it was picked up, totally immaculate! Better yet, it had never missed a service!

When I picked her up she had nothing on her, and I mean NOTHING! Well she had a window tint but that was all. So along came the wish list.

Stage one - bull bar. I bought this second hand for $300 from a guy called Joey off this site! Bargain!

Stage two - spotlights - which are 3 x IPF 900XS. This brings us to this point:

Stage three - electronic rust proofing. I know there is a lot of articles that say its great and some that say its not, but hey I thought I would give it a go!

Stage four - touch screen head unit. Got this one through a note on pradopoint a while back. Great unit, bluetooth, DVD, sat nav etc.

Stage five - Cargo barrier. Great for camping, more so for stopping my dog from sitting on the back seat!

Stage six - better speakers. Went and picked myself up some new Kenwood speakers for the doors. Got 6 x 9's for the front and 6's for the back. Did custom builds on both with MDF to make sure they were nice and secure, plus adds for slightly better bass.

    Stage seven - Safari Snorkel.

Stage eight- Old Man Emu shocks and springs. Wanted to articulate my wheel travel a bit better! Had these fitted by UV4X4 in Brisbane. Much better ride and gave it an overall lift of around 2 inches at first, 1.5 inches when settled.

Stage nine- UHF radio. Went GME for this one.

Stage ten- New tyres. The standard tyres just don't cut the mustard. Have whacked a set of Cooper AT3's on there. Great tyre, not too loud but plenty of grip. Did the build out with the chopping board for the spare tyre carrier as well!

Stage eleven- Brown Davis under body protection. Arrived today! Fitting tonight (I hope). Front under body protection grille and transmission protection.

Stage twelve - roof cage + lights. Waiting on this to arrive. Full roof cage with another two sets of IPF 900XS. The bull bar will now have a pencil, spread, pencil config. The rack will probably have spread, pencil, pencil, spread. I know this is overkill but you must admit it looks pretty sweet.

That will do me for now (yeah right). Future plans are for a dual battery system, winch, rear drawers, air compressor, awning and HF radio for when we go bush.

I didn't really decide to do these in any real particular order. The more mundane changes were made earlier in the cars life, suspension, under body protection and snorkel have all been more recent items to get it set up for extended travel.

Pictures will follow of the above!

Thanks guys. The bull bar I bought off a guy called Joey on this site a while back. Lives up the coast in Cairns or something. He had the three lights on it and I thought it looked pretty sweet!

Fitted the under body protection tonight. Well half of it. 2nd half of it wouldn't fit. Not a happy camper but I am sure it will be sorted. Front part was a mission! I'm sure it would be easier if you weren't doing it by yourself!

How come it doesnt fit and why was the front bit a mission? Because its so heavy?

The 2nd part is just 2 or 3 inches too long, which puts the mounting points out by that same difference.

The front grille did have a bit of weight to it, but it was just awkward doing it by yourself, with only some basic car ramps to get some clearance to get under the beast.

That and the new grille is about twice the size of the original.

Looks good Just when you are putting your HF in put a cut out switch on your electronic rust protection - they don't play nice together.

I see some many of you guys going for 3 lights on the bar - I take it that it's only in WA it's not legal?

Thanks will keep that in mind!

As for the law in QLD I do believe it is illegal. The law says that lights must be fitted in pairs "where possible". I think it's a bit iffy but haven't looked totally in to it.

Never been questioned about it crooza, I got three 170 strikers across the front... pathetic if you ask me. A Kenworth can have 50 million leds across the front of the truck but we cant have 3 spotties to fill the void in the bullbar... god forbid if we wanted to see a roo coming. When traffic are coming towards you you turn them off... so what does it make a difference if 3 or 10 are in the gap... sorry for the vent... hahaha..

Roof rack has arrived today! That was quick. Bought it from Sydney yesterday and at 7:30am this morning I get a call from the delivery driver making sure he can fit in to my work garage!

Also found out why the underbody protection would not fit - the 2nd grille was for a diesel model! Guys at Brown Davis were very helpful though and am sending me a new piece.

On a sad note I need a new lower belt tensioner and have to wait for 3 or 4 weeks to get one from Japan. Noisy whiney thing it is.

Roof cage has now been fitted.....properly! Stupid instructions are never right! Again a bit of an effort to do by yourself and a bit of giggling needed to get it to sit totally flush (rubber mallet) but all good in the end. Will post a picture up tomorrow.

Reverse light has been fitted as well.

And I have ordered another 2 sets of IPF 900XS to go across the front of the cage, hopefully they will be here on Monday!

Tomorrow am thinking about building some drawers.....we'll see how it goes!

Also I was missing a bit of bass, so in went a kicker 250 WRMS amplifier under the drivers seat. Very easy to hook up there!

Nice build CHF80, coming along well. Did you put a mix of spot and flood up on the roof rack?
