  • MUMSRIG..... need I say more

Well... one thing I have never done on this site is to create a Build Thread for MUMSRIG. There have been plenty of Threads relating to things that have been done to her but nothing detailing the entire build.

    So here goes nothing!

    She's a 2004 1KZ-TE Auto GXL 120 Series Prado...

Purchased bone stock with the addition of the Toyota Sovereign Bar from Kalamunda Toyota in 2006.

Didn't take long before we went on our first Pradopoint expedition and found the limitations of the Prado... Height! One of the 1st mods approved by the Minister of Finance was the lift. Plenty of research went into and at the end it all came down to a budget. Plus MUMSRIG plates in Pink and White were put on order for Tam's Birthday... She likes them!!

BlueMax front and rear was supplied and fitted by Coastal 4X4 in Jandakot. I'm glad that I didn't fit it myself as there was a warranty issue after a few months that was sorted by Coastal's and they ended up changing the front struts out with OME's. Chucked a recovery hitch in the rear and a pair of points on the front aswell.

Of course the obligatory two way radio went in early in the piece. I installed this inside the centre console and as it was a slimline jobbie it doesn't take up very much room at all in there. A 6DB and 4DB aerial are interchangeable if required. Window tint was a must so that was also slapped on. Whilst I was playing inside the car I installed a double din Pioneer DVD player/screen and also a roof mounted screen for the feral in the back.

Around the same time as the lift went in I fitted up a Pirahna Battery Tray and replaced the original battery and fitted the second battery with some RAC batteries... (They are still going strong). I made sure that the battery tray was fitted with insertion rubber to help avoid the dreaded inner guard cracking that seemed to be prevalent early on. A Redarc Isolator was also utilised to control the batteries... I also installed a battery voltmeter/circuit breaker in the engine bay and ran a permanent feed back to the rear of the car for the fridge.

A set of draws were next on the agenda and after looking at the retail version available we decided to build our own to save some dollars. We headed to Kalgoorlie for a Relie Run and whilst there my mate Darryl and I knocked the first set up over a couple of days. We fitted an EVA KOOL fridge slide to the top of the draws to hold the fridge. They came up a treat and were used for a couple of years. Many a draw set was spawned from this design on this forum and they have been improved upon 10fold. So much so that I have now built another set incorprating some of those new ideas.

After the draws were done we decided we needed a getaway trailer... So we did some research and employed a trailer manufacturer to build an offroad trailer to our specs. I purchased a Camper Trailer Top/Tent for it and bolted it all together. The trailer was built with an extended draw bar so that the tailgate on the Prado could open with striking the trailer etc and I also picked up 3x more Prado alloys to use on the camper. The camper has evolved over the few years that we have had it and since then I've installed a water tank and a battery system to it. We have also sold the original camper top and purchased a new and better version as we have learnt quite a bit over the last four years of use.

Then it was off to Manta, who manufactured a full 3" stainless steel Mandrel Bent exhaust system. MUMSRIG was delivered to their facility in Cunderdin where it stayed for 2 weeks whilst they designed and built the prototype and manufactured our system. This mod alone has probably made the most noticeable difference to MUMSRIG as it has improved the power immensely and it was also built to be quiet, which the Mrs is thankful of. I chucked a UniFilter at this point in aswell.

Here is a video of what it sounds like, you can the turbo whistle heaps more now..
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mPR1HHItAk

We then picked up a set of Mickey Thompson MTZ's on ROH rims for when the going gets tough and had the road tyres on the factory alloys for the normal driving duties. That soon changed as a couple of the rims got a bit of a hammering and buckled under the pressure So the MTZ's went onto the factory alloys.. Not long after we picked up a 2nd set of MTZ's for playing on the Pajero. They are now spare and will be used on the camper trailer.

Then came the XROX... MUMSRIG was yet again an R&D mule, this time for Outback Accessories. This is proabably the most noticeable modification the the car. It certainly gets plenty of attention!!
The bar was fabbed up and test fitted. A jig was made and another bar was built for testing purposes in Adelaide to ensure it passed all the ADR requirements including Air Bag deployment. Once that was complete another bar was fabbed and powder coated then fitted up. Bash plates were talked about at the same time but it was a little later on that they were fabricated.

The first set of bash plates were fabbed and fitted, however I wasn't essentially all that happy with how low they hung especially after talking with and fitting another set to Carl from Kalgoorlie's 120 Series. We put our heads together and met with the kind folk at Outback Accessories who agreed to take our ideas on board and redesign the bash plates. The new set were fitted up today and are a much tighter fit and also incorporate protective wings for the C.V's and Power Steer boots. MUCH BETTER!

Next up was Version #2 of the draws. With this set Tam wanted them to be modular, so that we could utlise one of the back seats if it was neede for an extra passnger at any stage. Brilliant idea as we have had the seats in and out plenty of times. Once again Darryl came to the rescue with his woodworking skills and knocked up 3x seperate section which are interchangeable. Ix section holds the fridge slide and is enclosed and the other 2x pieces are single draws.

Series #2 of the bash plates were installed on Saturday morning down at Outback Accessories. These fit up much better and closer to the frame etc as the first version hung fairly low and was a bit too open... The new ones have wings etc to help protect the C.V's and Power Steer boots..

They will be copping some bashing next Saturday for testing purposes only of course ;P and should soon be available to the Retail Public...
