Our Prado is about 18 months old now and we have very happy with it as a car and with its off road capabilities. It’s taken a beating in the Victorian high country and never seems to slow us down. So this starts the story of our D4D15O.
In 2010, Melissa (my wife) decides that that car must go. We made a short list of what would do what we wanted and a 2007 or 2008 D4D Prado was decided on. Searching in Alice Springs, Darwin and then back in Melbourne after the holidays, resulted with no suitable D4D’s being available.
Early May 2010 we received our nice and shiny GXL D4D 150 Prado. You have all seen photos of a 150 so let’s go straight into the modifications. The biggest problem with this was that we had blown the money that we were going to use to set it up on the purchase. 12 months later and we started fitting it out.
First was the UHF (taken from the old car), a Safari snorkel and the cargo barrier. Not happy with the cargo barrier, but after they have already drilled holes in the side of your car there is not much you can do. I took photos and complained to the manufacturer who reported that it was fitted correctly.
Second was the suspension lift and ARB Bar. Suspension is a Tough Dog 40mm lift with Bilstein shocks. Very happy with the ride but I had problems with the rear wheels coming off the ground a bit too easy when off-road until I got a couple of extended sway bar arms.
