  • How to get power to the roof rack for work lights (or any other reason)

I decided to fit one of our 18W LED work lights to the rear of the roof rack to aid in setting up camp etc at night and as always I try not to drill holes in the body by using existing holes.

I found the best place to get the cable into the car was behind the LH Tail lamp, remove the two bolts and pull the tail lamp backwards and it will pop out of its clips.

Remove the rubber grommet and take note of the gap in the body panels.

Push the cable down between the gap and it should exit in the jack cavity.

Make sure you have enough slack in the cable to do the required wiring to the switch. (Note: Cape York dust from Toyota not fitting rubber grommet on 7 pin cable correctly)

Cut a small hole in the rubber grommet for the cable and refit the grommet.

Refit the tail lamp, glue the cable into position with small dabs of clear silicone. Use tape to hold the cable until the glue dries.

Once the glue is dry remove the tape.

Do the same on top where the cable exits the top and along the roof rails.

      Mount and wire the lamp.

      Fit the switch and fuse.

      Test the lamp.

There are options with the switch...

      1) As I have done - simple on off as needed.
      2) 3 position 2 way switch (on-off-on) with one supply coming from the reverse lamps. (This will give you ultra bright reversing lamps with the option to switch them off or on at will)
      3) As above but have the switch on the dash where it can be controlled from the drivers seat.

      Hope you find this helpful.

      Regards

      Derek.

        Thanks Derek

Its drives me mad at work how they just drill holes in the body (and screw into the dash ) when a little effort is all thats needed.

Nice work Derek, particularly like the idea of a 3 way switch.

Have been thinking about more rearwards light for the reverse camera at night - will abandon the IR lights and now consider your idea!

Great post, Derek. I've got a light just like yours and want to mount it on the same roof rack like you did. Do you have any sort of bracing behind the aluminium panel where the light mounts? Also I need to keep it lower than top of rack otherwise it wont fit under roller door. Rack scrapes bottom of door as it is. Any ideas?

                Cheers

                  Hi Jim

I bolted mine high where the aluminium extrusion is the strongest, used the notch in the extrusion to hold the light bracket so it can't rotate or twist and used a 40mm body washer, spring washer and nyloc nut. It all holds quite well.

Your application would require a L bracket bolted to the bottom of the rack so you can keep the height down, you may need to extend the bracket backwards so you don't get a shadow from the roof-line.

                  Regards

                    Hi Derek,

Is your TW20 a tight fit or can you get a bigger cable down there? From your photo, it doesn't look like you could go much bigger.
I just have some slightly bigger twin core on hand and was looking at using that for the same setup as above as well as some strip lighting for an awning, but the TW20 will be more than adequate for a draw of 2 or 3 amps.
Guess I may just have to go a little smaller.

                        Hi Damien

You could go to our next size cable TW50 which is 4.58mm2 (known as 6mm automotive cable). It will be a tight fit but can be used.

                        Regards

                            Hi Derek,
Thanks for the info. Nice work as per usual.
Which Rhino rack do you have ? I would guess you have the 1.5m long one so as to minimise roof line shadow. I was deciding whether to go with the 1.2 or 1.5, but for the extra $50 or so, I think the 1.5 is the better option.

                            Cheers
