If you utilise the factory rails, then the carrying capacity is 80kg, INCLUDING the cross bars that go onto the factory rails.
If you removed the factory rails, and mount 3 cross bars to the roof mounting points, the carrying capacity is 100kg, INCLUDING the 3 cross bars.

If you remove the factory rails, I would not be removing it and replacing it constantly. The hard bit is removing the factory rails and then you have to make sure that the O-ring seal is back on and waterproofs the roof.

So if you remove the factory rails, you should replace it with a system that is easily removable should you wish to take it off to access underground carparks or to reduce fuel consumption. But you will be left with minor bits and pieces attached to the roof. I find that Rhino have quite an easy removal system. The ARB is possibly the most difficult.

      G'day shamozzle,

I have a full length Tracklander fitted to my 120 since 2006. It replaces the factory rails and is extremely strong and reasonably lightweight in ally. I have carried all sorts up there and currently use on Oztent RV4 woth no dramas as it sticks out the rear end with plenty of room for extras. The rack has served me well and I have never removed it from once it was fitted.
On my new 150 that should arrive next week , I wont be fitting one as Im still deciding which way to go for the items I carry now.

      goodluck

Thanks for the advice guys. I won't be dealing with any underground car parks while I'm here in Hedland so that throws that issue out of the window, and in thinking it over and having a chat with the minister it does make it easier to leave the rack on for quick weekend getaways so I'll probably remove the factory rails and mount the rack permanently. Should this change then the rack can always be removed if the need occurs.

          Hi,

I have a Tradesman Engineering steel mesh floor roof rack for my GXL 150. It's much lighter than the ARB product and sits reasonably low, (low enough to get into my work car park). I have used ARB steel racks in the past, they are great but VERY heavy and a real pain to remove. The guys at Tradesman Engineering were very helpful during the purchase and install period, so I would recommend them for both pre and post sales service.
          cheers
          Rob

I had a Toyota rack (Rhino) but am replacing it. Because it did not meet my requirements, Where as the Tradesman has, for more than 4 years.

I have a tracklander fitted to my 150. Alloy construction. It's very good and strong but bloody expensive. I chose this over the ARB one as we had an Oztent RV5 and needed a 2.1m internal rack space. I originally preferred the look of the 1.8m racks but I must say the size of the tracklander has been very useful. The funny thing is we ended up selling the RV5 only a month or so after we bought the rack to buy a hard floor camper. Whoops!
The tracklander accessories are stupidly expensive but you can get around most things. Awning mount for $70? I used a Rhino one for $20. High lift for $190? Powerful 4x4 one fits fine for $80 and is a shovel holder too.

                Hi Russ,

Sorry mate, but the Toyota rack lives in Brisbane now as I sold it about 3 weeks ago.

Why not an ARB/Rhino combo? ARB fit kit used with Rhino bars then a Rhino tray. The beauty of this combo is the Rhino tray is easy to remove/put back, the bars are good for carrying surf boards/kayaks and keeps the profile low. (I know its not a Prado but a lot of of the FJ is 150)

Just back from a Simmo trip, on my heavy duty Rhino Racks and Alloy basket I had.

                    Spare Tyre and Rim......40 Kg

                    Gas Bottle.....3.7Kg

2 Jerries (Plastic as they were lighter)....44Kg with fuel

                    Spacecase with spares 15 Kg

                    2 x Maxtrax....10Kg

                    Sandflag...5 Kg

                    Total.....a tad over 100

I only carried the 2 jerries from Mount Dare to Purni Bore and unloaded one jerry there to get me back under the 100Kg before the Dunes.

                    Worked a treat!!!

Love Rhino for the accesories, the Rhino Gas Bottle holder worked like a charm and the Sand Flag mount was perfect.

And I love the fact I can take the basket off when I get home and store until next trip (as opposed to some which seem permantly mounted).

                    BUT...they are expensive!!

However you do get what you pay for.
150 Silver Diesel GXL Auto with ECB Bullbar, Toyota Factory towbar, Black Widow Drawer system with Fridge slide and cargo barrier, GME UHF 3340 Radio, Waeco 50 Litre Fridge, Rhino Racks and Rhino Basket, ARB Awning, IPF XS Spotties, ABR Sidewinder Dual Battery system,Airtec Snorkel, Bilstien Shockies, King Springs, Poly Airbags and BFG A/T''s. Now towing a semi offroad Lotus Freelander 18.6 Van, with all the bells and whistles.

Just back from 20,000k lap up the middle and down the west coast. Mixture of highway, dirt road, tracks, sand etc, great time but that is for another story. Fitted Rhino aero bars before the trip with their alloy basket to carry the extra spare and wood etc. Only problem was the screws to hold down the aero bar supports came loose whilst travelling the rough road of the Mereenie loop. I had the wrong key with me and so had to take off everything to re tighten the bolts. Eventually bought an outrageously expensive special Rhino allen key in Alice Springs ($10). It became a regular routine to check the bolts each day. I did have to re tighten twice more but eventually got the right torque and they stayed tightened (this is with spring washers?). Don't forget to take that special allen key on trips.

I just removed the standard bars and installed a Tigerz11 rooftop tent rack. Found the quality of the Rack leaves a lot to be desired, the mounts do not seem to fit properly, I had to fit the roof mounts loosely, then fit the rack, then tighten the roof mounts. Fortunately a liberal application of silicon during fitting has kept everything waterproof. I am concerned about the way the mounts are attached to the roof and if this would do ant damage to the roof.
After a week of rain the roof is now stained with rusty water marks, from every drain hole, not a good look for any type of longevity.
The manufacture also leaves a lot to be desired, the mesh is very thin and separates easily - certainly not strong enough to stand on, the welding looks like it was done by a drunken cocky.
Definitely wouldn't recommend these to anyone considering doing any real offroad work and am in the process of assessing if we will be keeping the rooftop tent or putting up with the early starts to take the kids motorbike riding.
If we end up keeping the tent will be investigating a better constructed rack to mount the tent to.
Whilst the pricing was great, the quality is in line with the price.
Have a long think before looking at these racks
                                Kev,
