  • Model Variants

    Hi All,

New to the forum as I am just about to pull the trigger and purchase, can see I will be a regular here post purchase!.

I am just trying to clarify the post 07 "model Refresh" badges in Australia, and probably OS models. From what I have been able to piece together, from the 07 onwards they introduced the "Standard" as the base model, GX and then the GXL and the the Grande etc in the upper models. I read a little on a site (not sure if it was this one, haven't been able to find it using the search) that suggested that more often than not as far as accessories etc go, due to the way Toyota marketed upgrade packs for the GX, they are spec'd more or less the same as the GXL, the only variation being wheel size and sometimes roof rails. Is there anything else that is different?

The GX seem to go cheaper than the GXL obviously, even though as with the one I am looking at they still have the full list of ABS, cruise control, side steps, dual airbags etc etc.

    Thanks in advance!!

    Cheers
    Rod

On the GXL at least, the 07 upgrade includes dual air conditioning , as well as steering controls for audio etc as well as the upgraded stereo MP3 etc etc...

Can't remember for the life of me if there were any other differences?

There is a thread somewhere with a list of all the changes from year to year. Might take a bit of searching to find it though, you would need to search through google as it hasn't been an active topic since the upgrade.

        Thanks Switched...

Yeah, from 07 onward the audio controls were on the steering wheel - for all but the Standard from what I have seen, definitely on the GX I am looking at. I think the dual zone A/C may be one thing that was not an option on the GX, but was standard on the GLX.

Having done a bit more digging - may have answered my question here...

But anyone with anything further, feel free to help me out!

(now off to the builds section for some ideas)

        Cheers

I should still have scanned brochures for the 120 pre and post D4D. I will see if I can dig them out of my computer 1s and 0s and let you know. You need to look carefully at whether option packs are fitted or not and whether it is a manual or auto means a different spec level as well with the electronic aids.

Sometime in the last 6 months or so I posted up a comprehensive list of the model range but for the life of me cannot find it. It was pre forum update

            Edit
OK found what i was looking for, might not be quite the onfo you are after

The 120VX had side air bags standard fitment as well.
Another option is a 120 GX or GXL with option pack 1 or option pack 2. This included side and rear air bags TC + VSC amongst other things.

            120 GX
Option Pack 1 (auto & manual models)
            ABS
            Cruise Control
            Leather Shift Knob

Option Pack 2 (auto models only)
            ABS
            CC
            Leather Shift Knob
Front Side Airbags & Curtain Shield Airbags
            VSC
            TRC
Dual Zone Climate A/C (GX V6 & TD auto only)
Rear Cooler, Seperate Controls & Pollen Filter (GX V6 & TD auto only)

Option Pack 2 (man models only)
            ABS
            CC
            Leather Shift Knob
Front Side Airbags & Curtain Shield Airbags

            120 GXL
Option Pack 1 (auto models only)
Front Side Airbags & Curtain Shield Airbags
            VSC
            TRC
            DAC

Option Pack 1 (man models only)
Front Side Airbags & Curtain Shield Airbags

All the items that the 120 GX has in the option packs that aren't listed in the GXL option packs are standard fitment to the GXL
I don't know how many 120 GX and GXL's were optioned by the purchaser from new but I am guessing somewhere in the order of 1 in 100.
You may find that some 2nd hand dealers would not be aware they have an optioned Prado in their lot so it pays to research. A easy way to identify an optioned Prado is the A pillar trim covers are embossed with airbag wording and the drivers seat will have a little tag on the side of the backrest.

see...I knew I was going to like this place!

Thanks guys that is exactly the info I was after!

So from that, feel free to correct me if I am wrong....an Auto GX with option Pack 2 is more or less same spec as the GLX un optioned? And the way to tell that it is optioned with pack 2, is the Dual Zone AC? Someone mentioned different Radio, but that isn't an issue, the standard one will be coming out...

I am also guessing that most clueless car yard aren't going to mention the VSC and TRC - especially here in Tassie where they aren't exactly plentiful anyway! (for sale that is)

              Thanks again for the help!!

              Cheers

Wow I am one in a hundred!

Rodders, essentially yes any auto GX with option pack 2 is the same as an auto GXL with option pack 1 (the only one available on GXL). My 08 GX auto has dual air, all the electronic aids etc. The only things that the GXL got in addition were alloy wheels, privacy rear glass, 6 stacker CD and roof rails. For me none of those were deal breakers because the equivalent op1 GXL was about $6k more than the op2 GX and 4 months delivery. I bought the optional alloys (phoenix) though all I really wanted was 4 more steel wheels for the trailer but the alloys were cheaper for 5 (work that one out), the Prado was getting window tint, I was planning on fitting a dual DIN DVD/nav unit but in the end picked up a GXL 6 stacker for $50 from someone who fitted the DVD/nav unit and finally once the Prado was lifted and had 275 rubber under it the roof rails would foul on the garage door and I would fit my own roofrack anyway when we go camping. Mind you that is no longer an issue because the roof rack a couple of years later fouled the door, the door frame, the plaster etc etc and now a nice shiny new taller door has been fitted!!!!

The best way to see if you have an optioned GX or GXL is to check for things like the dual air, the extra airbags, stability control etc etc in the automatics. The manuals only got option pack 1 and missed out on the traction aids but that is the same GX or GXL.

                Michael

edit: I have found the Prado brochure on my hard drive (more of a chore than you could imagine given recent events with data encryption) so if you want me to email it to you send me a pm with your email address. The file is only about 500k but I believe posting here is against the copyright rules.

                  Thanks mjrandom - PM incoming.

Turns out the GX I was looking at only had option pack 1 - based on it not having dual air...

                  Cheers
