Tested the brakes yesterday and have nothing but praise for the engineers/designers. Travelling south over the bridge at Hexham during light rain. Came to the end of the bridge to turn right where the lights were red. Slowing for the traffic waiting for the lights to change, it became very apparent that the road was greasier than expected. The car slewed sideways on the slight bend after applying the brakes. A collision looked eminent but the emergency braking came in to affect and I could feel the tell tale pedal hammer from the abs. The steering came good and allowed a quick recovery into the unoccupied lane. Foot still on the brake pedal very little pressure was required to finally stop.

I've had this problem a couple of times also, I've only done 8000km in the car so far, but i've been nearly thrown through the window when just tapping the brakes to wash off a bit of speed.
Then the other day i pushed the pedal to the floor with no effect as I was coming up to SA's biggest roundabout, then all of a sudden i got full force ABS type braking and ended up in a could of smoke... I looked like I was a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

It's great isn't it. Especially when you look at your car and shake your hea in disbelief. Everyone is "Yeah sure it as the car and not the muppet behind the wheel."

My brakes saved my life the other day. Imagine this:
          - Freeway
          - I'm on the right lane
          - Sedan beside me in the middle lane
          - Truck pulling a load of fuel in the left lane with the rear roughly half a car length on par with the Sedan

          - Truck turns blinkers on and immediately begins to merge into the middle lane
          - Sedan sh!t himself and swerves into me (instead of braking!!! Bloody idiot)
          - I sh!t myself and slam on the brakes and steered into the emergency lane
          - ABS kicks in and all sorts of beeping occurs

All this happened at 100km/h and I not once did I feel out of control of the car. Love my Prado!

I was going to talk to the dealer about this when I go in for my next service. I had a car go into a turnout lane in the hills, but then not let me past and just drove back into my lane ... so hit the brakes.. ABS kicked in and I was quite impressed - no issue at all. Not so impressed with the retiree in a camry who tried to take out the front quarter panel on my brand new prado!

However I find that when I hit the brakes quickly but not for avoidance it just locks up! I work in sales so I do lots of km's around the city and there are lots of nuts out there who think that blind spots don't exist or forget they have trailers attached to their vehicles! When I did my defensive driving course at work (have to do one every three years, nice excuse to go do some skids on a closed track ) we were told that most people in an emergency don't hit their brake hard enough to use the brakes at their full capacity and it takes them much longer to stop than it should. It seems that the car has another brain in there somewhere and hits the brake for me like it thinks I should not how I actually want to!

Next service is in a fortnight so I'll see what Toyota have to say!

              It seems to stop eventually.

I had lots of problems when I first got the car. but haven't had any problems in last 40,000km. But whether that's the car or my driving style who knows.

When you say it locks up, does it stay locked up or just give a quick chirp of the tyres then go into ABS mode? If it's the former then you have a problem, if it's the latter then I believe that is Toyota's "Brake Assist" system. It's meant to sense when you've hit the brake peddle in a hurry and give you a bit of a hand. Annoys the heck out of me and scared me the first time I did it. I think your driving style will adjust over time although I'm not convinced of the benefits of being trained to NOT hit the pedal hard when you want to stop in a reasonable hurry.

It's a quick chirp of the tyres and then the brakes let go, most likely because its scared the crap out of me and I jump of the pedal when it happens. When i thought about it a bit more, its happened in cases where I have been accelerating and then quickly touch the brake trying to wipe off a few k's for something out of the ordinary that's happened up ahead (if that makes sense!) ... not lift off the accelerator, brake/change gears like I would if I was just slowing down to stop.

If it is this "brake assist" you speak of, I might talk to the service people about it and see what options there are about it - at this rate I'm going to end up with whiplash! If they can just turn it off I'd be happy - I'm quite capable of hitting the brakes myself when I need them!

                  Thanks for your responses!

My thoughts exactly. When I hit the picks with a certain amount of force, that's how quickly I want to stop, I don't want a computer deciding to "help" me stop a little quicker. Be interested to hear how you go with Toyota but my guess would be it's a feature that they won't touch.

They can't touch it. But it seems to go away. Like I said, for the first 8,000km it was always there, but I haven't had a problem in the last 40,000.

Hi all, I have had a 150 for 18 month, 50,000 k and in the first months this brake assist use to kick in regular scaring the S..T out of me but either I learn't or the truck did but we don't anoye each other anymore. I think I learnt to adapt to the way the brake assist works. Dont get off the acelerater onto the break it a flash, or you need to peel your nose off the windscreen. Dam good brakes in these 150s.

I'll never complain about the brakes being too good

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

First time it happened, I thought it was unusual. Second time I was doing no more than 10kmh in traffic at lights when a lane splitting m/cyclist chose to pull in front. Worked well, except everything on the passengers seat was now on the floor. Seems to me that if you snatch a whole amount of brake pedal in a hurry, the brake booster adds extra assistance.

I do about 8,000 km per winter on snow covered roads (I'm a ski instructor and have winter tyres), this "brake assist" thing is a real pain, it has caused the car to go completely sideways several times and amazingly the ABS does not know anything about going sideways! It is dangerous and shoud be removed before it kills me and or others around me. My dealer knows nothing about it, however he doesen't seem to know much about anything to be honest!
