Thank you everyone for instructions, photos and advice.
+1 fitted my glow in the dark yellow recovery points today. Easy as with the guide on PP. definitely take out the ARB plates, they are huge, I wouldn't want to leave them in to rattle about considering how easy it is to remove them!

    • +1 for me too....Just cancelled my appointment for next week & saved myself $100+ for the install of my recovery points - less $14.00 for a magnetic picker upperer thingy and I'm $86+ in front !!...Just to clarify, this is my first 4WD, I have no mechanical experience, and did it with no ramps and wheels still on...First side took me an hour, second side 25 mins...I fitted the Roadsafe points bought from OL...As previously mentioned, the fiddliest bit is extracting the ARB nut from inside the chassis (I have an ARB Deluxe Bar fitted) - The $14 I spent on the the magnetic tool was gold, makes life so much easier...I did have to sightly bend up the ARB wings when re-installing so they tucked up into the recovery point, but other than that, no issues re fitment...I've underestimated the self satisfaction one gets standing back and admiring ones handywork that otherwise would have cost money....A huge THANKYOU to fellow PP'rs for their detailed posts and pictures - couldnt have done it without you (or the magnetty thingy majig)

      • I had my new design Roadsafe Recovery Points fitted on Friday, 12.9 HT bolts used for all fixing points. They look the same as the pic I posted back on post #183 except stronger wider bolts were used to attach them. There was no charge for installing them and Roadsafe supplied the new set of points to replace my old ones (they got chopped with an angle grinder at the first test fit, I never got those ones back). I've posted some pics in my build thread so won't double up here.

        • What's the WWL on yours, 3250 or 5000 kgs?

I knew there was something I forgot to check LOL. One is turned around so you can't read the WLL info, will try and get it off the other one.

It's 3250 KGs, photo below (you can just make out the numbers) :-

I will find out exactly what led to the reduction in WLL but I'd say it must be related to the removal of a small section of metal near the top mounting holes. The change in design was made to stop the point from fouling any washers used with the mounting system on TJM bars.

Note: I have part no. RPPRA150-H13, I have seen both an F12 and D13 suffix on the older design points for the 150.

              • @ Vk3zgw,

The reduction in WLL is due to the changes to the shape of the point to accommodate TJM bars. Destruction testing of the new design points resulted in a lower Failure Load, that subsequently resulted in applying a lower WLL to the component. Roadsafe's destruction testing allowed for a much higher load to be applied before deformation, but they allow for approx. 2-2.5x safety factor, hence the revised 3250kgs WLL per point.

Also, the -H13 in the part number denotes the batch it came from so might change down the track. I guess older stock would have a pre-H13 batch code.

                • I find this all very interesting, a 3250kg recovery point, using a 4700kg shackle connected to a 8000kg snatch strap. the weakest link is still the recovery point.

                  • Yes, hadn't escaped me either. Some comfort that at least with a equaliser the total is 6500kgs. Still, the originals were 5000 kg each. If I had my time over I wouldn't have bought the Road Safe ones!! Especially as my SmartBar doesn't require the modified points as does the TJM bar. I thought I was getting the 5000 kgs until I opened the package.

                    Anyone want to swap!

                    • As I said before the actual load before the points deformed in destruction testing was much higher than the stamped WLL but there has been a safety factor applied. When you look at the difference between the old and new not a lot of metal has been removed, I don't think you have anything to be concerned about.

                      • I reckon they changed the grade of steel, or they upped the safety factor. But if the destruction testing shows that the points failed at different loads, then they have changed the material.

                        Comment

                        • I can't answer that as I don't know what the original failure load was on the previous design. I was advised it was 9t for the new design.

                          • If you were told that it was 9000kg for the 'H13', then they are telling you a different story than I got. I was also told that it was not tested to destruction.

The WLL was reduce, when NDT testing the 'H13' due to the modification, by 35%. That figure is not insignificant IMO. In engineering the forces act in a vector sense and dependent where the mounting point is in relation to the area where the material is removed, has a bearing on the end result. The integrity of recovery equipment is important because of the forces involved and the potential risks for injury. If I had the choice of a snatch strap that it's MBS was 35% lower than another (5200kgs as against 8000kgs), I know which one would be sitting in my kit.

The manufacture's web site says not to use the product past it's WLL rating. That's a statement that I'd agree with for any tested item. I also appreciate from the manufacturer's perspective that the cost of a redesign maybe outweighed by the level of market demand.

A quick look around the web and I can't see any other Prado 150 recovery points with a stated WLL. I'm sure there must be though. The RS ones on EB are still showing 5000kgs as is the picture on the RS web site.

                            • I can only tell you what I was told by Roadsafe. My 150 Kakadu was used for the development of the new design and I have personally been down to Roadsafe's Melbourne HQ twice for test fitting, first for the old design points which I had purchased via eBay and 2nd for the redesigned ones. That 2nd visit was before the destruction testing was completed but I have been assured this was carried out. Where did your advice come from?

As for the pictures on eBay and Roadsafe's website I can only assume they haven't got round to updating them yet. There may still be sellers with old stock too.

I am pleased to report that they now fit without any overlap of the washer on the passenger side. TJM use 2 bolts at the top of the bull bar mount on that side so previously the point would overlap one of the washers which isn't ideal.

The driver's side will also fit but because there is only 1 bolt at the top on that side (TJM only use 1 because of KDSS) we didn't get that one fully bolted up. There didn't seem to be a convenient chassis rail hole to pass the nutplate through and removing the bar would have taken too long. I know plenty of guys with KDSS have these mounted so if you know the magic spot to slot the plate through I'd love to hear about it.

Here's a photo of the passenger side :-
                                Fido666,

I've been reading about your installation problems with interest as I too have the Kakadu (i.e. with KDSS). My vehicle has no bull bar, but am still concerned whether I will have problems fitting the points. On the RHS I can see the rectangular hole through which I *think* everyone is talking about inserting the but plate through. However on the LHS, whilst this hole is still there (just in front of the strut), access to it looks to be very difficult due to metal hydraulic lines running up and over the chassis rail. You can't even see the hole in the shots below, but I can feel it's there.

The bolts securing the bracket attaching these hydraulic lines to the chassis rail look like they could be removed easily enough, but I'm not sure this will allow enough movement (if any) in the hydraulic lines to get sufficient access to insert the nut plate. Does your vehicle have these hydraulic lines? Am I mistaken as to the location of the access hole used to insert the nut plate?

Can you also confirm is the mounting hole I have marked where the top bolt goes (i.e. the one that needs the nut plate behind it)?

                                Thanks in advance.

                                Cheers,

                                David.
